What's behind the carpet on the trans hump
I'd like to mount a little 4x6 mesh pocket to the passenger side of the transmission hump to hold a cellphone for the passenger. It is designed to mount using 4 small screws. I don't want to put any holes in center console but was thinking a couple of small holes in the carpeted area wouldn't be noticeable if I took it off or it broke in the future. Ideally I would like to get a small piece of sheet metal behind the carpet that I could then screw into. Any idea or guidance?

I cannot say with certainty, but typically it would be sheet metal leading to the bottom of the car (outside).
When you drill holes, it will ruin your carpet and leave a path for rust to start. Alternatives are seeing if you can rig something up with strong magnets or "vampire clips" which I learned about through outfitting my gun safe. Basically they pierce the carpet and hold organizers (not sure if it is just "Lockdown" who uses them). Some other alternatives are to get a hanging organizer which hangs off the front seats or perhaps a tray that fits on the hump. If you do drill, make sure you are not drilling into a wiring harness by having someone tap the drill site and someone underneath to see where it will hit. For water proofing, I have had good luck with using windshield adhesive which is a super sticky black tar and I've had the roll for over 20 years. I just put some on where the screw protrudes and cover the head and penetration point. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I was not planning to drill to the outside - was thinking more of poking a hole into the carpet then putting a little piece behind the carpet to fasten a small sheet metal screw. A no hole solution is idea - I like the vampire clip idea - will also have to try the velcro idea also. Now that I think of it perhaps I could use one of those no residue picture wall hangers. Also wondering if there is a way to slide a couple of thin strip of metal between the carpet and console to for a bracket that I could "hook" onto the top of carpet or fasten to something under the console cover. then attach the frame to the strips.

years ago (early 2000s) bmw sold a very similar item. it attached to the carpet with coarse threaded nylon screws, like this
https://www.ebay.com/itm/30pcs-Car-I...gAAOSwfmddVlZA that would probably be a better bet than drilling into the metal.

Don't drill.
Drill hole in sheet metal = rust and leaks |
