Boiling water taps

Our kitchen tap is leaking beyond repair and a new kitchen is also on the horizon - not because the tap is leaking! Was thinking about getting a new tap that can later be used in the new kitchen and the boiling water ones have taken my attention.

The new tap must have a retractable hose. The wife says so.

I looked at Quooker which I liked as I can add chilled and sparkling water features later. However, the “cube” that adds these features is massive and would take up lots of under cupboard space. That said, I can get chilled and sparking water from a fridge so I’m not sure it’s a necessary feature in a tap.

If anyone who has such a tap can give any advice or recommendations, it would be appreciated.

A few things to hear in mind :

The water wont actually be boiling. Very hot, yes. Boiling, no.

This type of system keeps the stored water at the set temperature, 24x7. Can cost a lot to run. Would you fill and boil your kettle 24x7, just in case you needed some hot water ?

You should factor-in the additional maintenance (calcification, etc) and repair costs, because something (eventually) will go wrong.

IMO they're a waste of money but ETTO of course.

Quooker, don't bother with anything else.

Fit a few different types and they aren't a patch on Quooker. They're spot on, true 100oc boiling and very efficient to run.

Got a customer who has a Franke one and he's on his 3rd boiler!

Looks at these when planning a remodel

Quooker seemed to be the best offering, but a lot of money to replace a kettle and essentially took up the entire cupboard under the sink

Decided it was one of those nice to have if money means nothing options as your paying to save time to boil a kettle and reduce worktop clutter

Really wanted one, but just couldn’t justify the cost

Doing a kitchen refit ourselves and had a very quick look at Quooker ones...then the price and closed the browser quickly.

For me, £1,100 for an expensive kettle and the energy use...I'll just boil the kettle twice a day.

I'd rather spend the extra on the kitchen myself but ETTO.

Like a few others here, thought about one when we did the kitchen a few years back, but given how little the kettle is boiled (admittedly more often currently), just didn't see any point. If it's keeping water at or near boiling the whole time, got to be using some energy.

For cold, filtered water, we have the fridge, which is running anyway.....

Does make me chuckle, half the people wouldn't think twice at spending £1500 on a Visibility Package on a car they'll probably own 2/3 years but a Tap at £1000 that'll be in your kitchen for the next 10 years that you'll use daily is overpriced and a gimmick

Had a Quooker boiling water tap for 9 years - wouldn’t be without it. Had it serviced last week for the 1st time by Quooker & it only cost £175. Engineer replaced a lot of parts so now have more or less have a new tap.

They only cost 4p a day on standby as the tank is well insulated.

Not sure I would bother with the hot/cold/sparkling water tap as that is high maintenance.

Engineer said the most reliable tap is the boiling water only one.

Have had a Quooker for 4 years now and would never go back. Godsend in lockdown when bouncing between one work Zoom call and another, to be able to grab a quick cuppa. Also great for cooking and where you need to clean a grimy pan or the like. Expensive, yes, but absolutely worth it imho. 2 friends/colleagues have gone for one on my recommendation and both are complete converts.

We got an insinkerator one when our kitchen was done in July, it was only a few hundred quid so thought feck it, worth a try if not just rip it out. So far so good, very handy not just for drinks but cleaning pans and trays etc.

We have a Grohe one and wouldn’t be without it. As said above it great to make a quick brew between zoom meetings and we use it for cooking. The running cost is negligible.

We've had a Franke one for 5 years now with no problems. Guessing servicable life probably makes a difference if your water is hard but ours is soft and I change the filter regularly - guessing many don't. Back then there weren't many options that gave a genuine 100 degrees at the tap and that was essential as tea drinkers (they do this by pressurising the water in the tank so it can be above 100 degrees). Boiler is behind the plinth so only the filter takes up any cupboard space. We wouldn't be without it - I've always worked from home, so makes making a cup of tea a really quick process. Only negative I would say is the water can tend to spurt out (due to the pressure I guess) so can splash a little - but I'm assuming latest ones have resolved that. When it fails we will get another without any doubt but I would look at other brands too... Quooker does seem to be the one at present...

Interesting, we've had ours for a number of years and I think it would benefit from a service. How did you book the £175 service?

Cheers!

I did it the old fashioned way and rang them - very helpful & efficient too. You don’t pay until after the service has been completed and the engineer has replaced the necessary parts & submitted his report to Quooker. They emailed the invoice the next day.

Update after 4 months of installing the Quooker Flex tap….

I bought the tap online at approx 20% discount (Google is your friend here) and installed it myself. Very easy to do and there are clear video instructions online.

The verdict - it’s great! It’s definitely boiling water from the tap. We have used it what seems like a lot. The usual stuff such as hot drinks and pot noodles lol, filling pans for boiling veg etc.
The best thing I found by accident is that if you run boiling water and cold at the same time it’s perfect for hand washing. No need to run the tap until normal water flows through the system. As for running cost, I’ve not noticed any dent in the leccy bill.

Summary: the kettle is dead.

Quick brew between meetings….

Get one of these near your desk:

Breville HotCup Hot Water Dispenser with 3 KW Fast Boil and Variab... https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002NG...89RZ8Q2NW7R7SD

Much better value and only heats what's needed.

Mind you, look at the options list on my new car - I'm in no position to judge

Had one of those before. They are good but still have to fill it like a kettle. Replaced it with a Bibo so could get chilled water and hot out of same thing but that takes up a lot of worktop space so went hot water tap when the kitchen was refitted, use it a lot not just for drinks.

I think this thread tempted fate as my Franke boiler failed last month (just short of 6 years old). It was actually just the thermostat that went but decided to swap it out for a Quooker. Went for the Combi boiler option where it supplies the hot as well as boiling water as my hot water was on a long pipe run so took ages to get the water hot (so often used to mix the boiling with cold). Anyway - really pleased with it, I would say the Quooker tap itself is not quite the quality of the Franke one but aside from that it is a better solution.

One of my customers is on his 3rd boiler in about 5 years, sounds like you didn't do bad!

I thought the Quooker build was better tbh, dependant on which Franke one you had the boiling tap section sticks along with the little press button.
