[Discussion] Most cost effective fluid choices
Hello all, I Plan to change out all fluids here in the near future and have comprised a list.
Looking through old threads, some years old by this point. I would like to know if these are suitable choices. Vehicle: 2017 320i x-drive Front Differential : Redline 75W85 GL-5 Gear Oil Rear Differential : Redline 75W85 GL-5 Gear Oil (Redline recommends this oil for both front/rear diffs and seen some threads with others using it) Transfer Case : Febi Bilstein Transfer Case Fluid; SAE 75W 1 Liter P/N: 83222409710 Febi Bilstein (Meets Specifications: API GL-4, DTF 1, Shell TF-0870) Transmission : Pentosin ATF8 Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF8 transmission fluid is equivalent to Shell M-L12108) Brake Fluid : ATE DOT 4 Low Viscosity I know there have been many threads asking about what fluids are safe to use so hopefully this thread can serve as a guide for the most cost effective alternatives. Would love to hear your opinions. Thank you. |

Was looking for info on changing all the fluids in my car, and you touched on most of it. Besides the front and rear differential, transfer case, transmission, what else needs changing besides the usual coolant, oil, and brake fluid. Would this be all? Thanks.

With the exception of engine oil and to a lesser extent brake fluid, all of these fluids are something you're only going to change once every 5 years or so or likely 1-2 times over the life of the car. I would recommend sticking with all original fluids (ZF lifeguard for trans, BMW hypoid for diff, BMW transfer case fluid); long interval fluid changes aren't the best place to try and penny pinch.

Differentials are fine. Pentosin in transmission is fine. Pentosin blends fluids for ZF and is oldest fluid OE supplier in Germany. Redline is fine.
But transfer case ABSOLUTELY BMW DTF1!!! |
