Thumbs up AutoExpress Performance Car of the Year

AutoExpress Performance Car of the Year/

The Cayman S came out ahead of the E92 M3 for 2008. The GTR took the top spot though.

The Cayman S upgraded in 2010 is my most wanted car at the moment so to see the 2008 version only come in slightly behind the GTR is promising.

That still seems pretty random that the Cayman S came out that high. I've never seen it recieve any top performance rewards before the GTR came out (even though I think it's deserving of one).

Cool

A lot of performance testing deals with things like 0-60, raw power, HP.

But a mid-engine, super balanced, extremely light sports car with nearly 300HP? It would be very competitive with the heavier GTR on a real track with lots of curves.

The Cayman S doing so well doesn't surprise me at all. I've read MANY stories about Cayman's keeping up with GTRs on the track during track days.

Great the see the M3 scoring a good result this time round. I was also impressed with the TT/S, posting a time within 2 seconds of the M3 and that from a car with can't turn off it's ESP which if you have any experience will know that this will have affected it's time by around a second on this course.

The GT2 was amazingly quick but achieved a very poor overall result but no surprise as to the winner.

It was a shame the R8 wasn't invited, if it had have been I would have expected a top three position if not a tie for top spot.

Cool

I think the GT2 was docked for it's price tag and the amount of attention you have to give the car to actually make it perform the way it was meant to.

If they had the R8 I'm sure it would've definitely been a shoe-in for top spot.

I'm just as surprised about the TT-S.

+1 on both counts...

Guys the TT-S came 1.7s slower than the M3 despite being powered by a 2.0TFSi compared to a big V8, just imagine what the more powerful TT-R will do

Thumbs down

I think what hurts the M3, and the entire 3 Series line (335i, 328i, etc) is the overall weight of the cars. Weight is just as important as HP when it comes to raw performance. The 3 Series is just too heavy for its own good.

Now BMW won't be even making the M3 CSL.

Man...TT-RS is going to be .......I'm waiting for which engine they will go with.....It's either the 3.0 V6 SC from the upcoming B8 S4 or a brand new 2.5 5 cylinder twin turbo....I'm hoping it's the latter

this review is kind of messy. i am surprised by some of the cars in the line up? where is the c63? so basically the entire review involved this one driver taking each car for a hot lap and recording the time and then the winner was decided based on that laptime?

They explain why each car was ranked where it's at.

I'm not sure the 3.0SC engine would fit under the hood without a major rethink of the layout, but it would be a perfect partner. The most likely option is the 5 cylinder 2.5L, it's enough of an engine to yield adequate power and torque not to overwhelm the fwd biased Haldex system but be quick enough to compete with the Z4M and SLK55.

Though if BMW and Mercedes decide to fit either the 4.0v8 from the M3 or the 6.2L from the C63 under the hood, then the TT will be found wanting and be right back to square one where it was in the last TT model.

I wouldn't believe that comparison. You never know what the circumstances were or who the drivers were. Personally, I only trust AutoCar and Top Gear with comparisons. Even the magazines are full of shit.

I mean seriously, click on the GT2 and look at its lap time video, the driver is a complete noob.

+1.

Why is it when people don't believe something, they automatically say "Oh it can't be true because I say so."

I mean I watched "every" video and the guy is obviously an awesome driver. What was so "n00b" about him?

Grow up people.
