Rear Spoiler leaks water day after rain?

I have noticed when I accelerate my rear spoiler will drip water on the rear window a day or two after I have driven it in the rain.

My obvious conclusion is that water is getting inside the spoiler when it rains and then leaking out when I accelerate.

I am not 100% about bothering with the dealer yet. Currently it is just an annoyance.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and/or the fix?

Thanks

I washed the car, dried it and parked it for a few days and when I used it again, water dripped down the rear window. Now when I say dried it I mean microfiber towel and diligent leaf blowing in all the crevices to avoid water dripping down. Annoying but I guess it has something to do with the design back there.

I have found a little bit of water pools in the bottom of the spoiler. Up to a day or two after pressure washing the car, a trickle of water will drip
from it down the back window when I take hard left or right turns.

As a hobbyist detailer, this car is one of the hardest vehicles to prevent dripping from the spoiler and mirrors. I dry with a leaf blower, compressed air, and towel and still get dripping days later.

Okay sounds like it is normal on this car and will be a continuous annoyance.

Like when it is raining and you open the hatch and water runs down the sides and into the cargo area, WTF? Who designed that?

Or when you lightly use the washer fluid, but it still runs down your side window leaving streaks.

Sorry had to vent for a minute.

I appreciate the feedback.

Great thread! I have been meaning to ask how to avoid drips from mirrors, as no matter what I do, they keep dripping into the next day. I don't have access to a leaf blower but clear also that doesn't help.

Besides the rear window drip, the following dripping drives me crazy
1) both side mirrors. Typical for all cars but seems to be worse on these
2) Trunk seam above the license plate

The crazy among us will be happy to know using a metrovac side kick or big boi blower is much better than a leaf blower to prevent the drips since the air comes out in a more concentrated stream.

Don’t forget the roof rails. These seem to drip for hours after drying them off!

Same here. You can wash & dry this car to a tee with nice equipment (including a leaf blower). But that wont prevent this from happening. It happens to everyone on all cars.

I read in another post there is a small hole under the spoiler that you can feel with your finger.

The poster put a small piece of tape over it when washing an the issue went away (spoiler at least).

I’ve yet to try it myself.

Wouldn't that just hold the water in wherever it is collecting? My thought is if the water is collecting inside the spoiler and you stop the water from leaking out of the spoiler, eventually the spoiler will be full of water???

I know on Jeep Wranglers, you drill a 1/16th inch hole in the bottom of the mirror and it allows the water to drain out and stops the mirrors from collecting water and slowly dripping out. Maybe there is somewhere on our mirrors we can do the same?

According to the poster, he removes the tape after washing and got no
drips. He said water was getting up and in rather then from the top and down.

It’s worth a shot but I was in a rush this weekend and didn’t try. For me, the water will come out when driving despite hitting it with a leaf blower from top and bottom.

Try closing the mirrors for a couple of minutes, then re-open. I find that drains the water nicely

I may have found a way to combat this. Yesterday I washed my car and while I was drying, I opened the trunk and left it open and watched all kinds of water leak out. I'm not sure if this did it but I drove around a lot yesterday after washing and had no water leak out. I will see later today when I drive if it still doesn't leak.

That was me, thanks for the mention. Here's my post about taping the hole on the spoiler of my M40i before washing. I'm not sure if the X3M spoiler has the same hole in the same place. Obviously, this isn't going to help with rain but it does keep most of the water out of the spoiler when washing:

I do that too. I also leave the doors open for several minutes while drying and a lot of water drips out of the doors as well.

With all due respect I doubt taping that small hole with blue painters tape is going to make much of a difference. It's a great idea. But been there & done that with no improvement.

It works for me. There's no water dripping from that hole any more when I wash my car.
