Tire Replacement

Struck out searching, so here it is:

On my subaru, because of the Viscous Coupling Differential, it was a no no to have tires with substantially different treadwear on different corners.

Last night I sliced one of my winter tires open on a raised manhole cover. The tires have about 3,000 on them.

Can I just toss a brand new one on, or do I need to do both fronts? I can't seem to find an authoritative source for this answer, and I honestly don't trust the hacks at my local service department.

I also have a Subaru. After having my BMW in for a tire repair, I asked my SA about this issue. He claims the BMW's AWD system is less sensitive to tire wear than Subaru's AWD. He also said that he'd replace all 4 on the BMW if there was more than 30% wear, or about 10,000 miles (even on my Sub, I had to replace all 4, not just the front 2). So, you should be OK just tossing a new one on with just 3,000 miles.

I would think 3000 miles of wear is small enough that it should be fine. Funny I used to have an '05 STI. I really miss that car.

BMW got a lot of "grown up" scooby owners. Amazing how the AWD / Forced Induction addiction takes hold of someone.

Thanks for the tips. That's what I thought. Ordered the rubber today, so I'll be back in action Monday night.

BMW's X-Drive system can tolerate up to 1% in diameter difference between wheels. A brand new 225/40-18 tire's overall diameter is 25.1", and 1% of that is 0.25" or 8/32". Given that a stock Potenza 050A runflat comes with 10/32" tread when new (according to Tirerack), you can theoretically mix a brand new one with one that is worn down to the wear bands (3/32") and still be within limit.

Personally I won't push it that far. I will replace both tires when one is down to may be 5/32" tread. That is 50% wear.

You SA is right. I own a Subie. xDrive does not have a viscous center coupling. I would not replace all 4 tires after just 3,000 miles, but I could be persuaded if the wear difference was going to be more than 10-15,000 miles.

This is not a fact but rather a recommended theory.

I dont know if 1% is the true difference, but I do know from experience that running 225/40/18 and 245/40/18 on a stock staggered setup will cause your DTC light to come on all the time and you wont be able to drive it over 30 mph without the DTC/DSC start to slow you down and possibly break the car. Someone told me it's almost a 2.5% difference. Go figure... sometimes i wish I bought an i instead of an xi. I'll test that theory the next time I see some heavy snow

Awesome, this is the ex Subaru owner thread. former '02 WRX wagon owner here!

If I were in your shoes I would take a tread depth gauge and measure the tread of all the tires and go from there. I bet you will find the treads have worn 1/32" or less all around, so you should be fine tossing on a new tire.

FWIW, I had the exact situation happen on my WRX (nail through an almost new tire) and I did replace just one tire

Good find- actually I thought I remembered something from earlier than this, but this could be it!

Your setup has a 2.5% size difference between front and rear (rear being 2.5% larger), that is why your DTC/DSC goes crazy thinking that you have a bad case of wheel slip affecting both front wheels. Keep using that and your transfer case clutch pack will soon be damaged.

AWD tire replacement

i know this is not timely as the OP was back in 01 Nov. but here it is. i recently sold my Audi Quattro for my 335xi. i had a similar incident w/ my audi, cut a tire down (FR) at 5K miles. Audi measured the rubber and said no problem w/ butting a new tire at this mileage. and anyone knowing Quattro, their tolerances are much tighter then BMW x drive. so by default a good guess is yes you are ok to replace a new tire. Audi had to measure all 3 other tires.

maybe the OP can let us know how he made out.

I just had to replace an RFT due to a bubble. Damn FTM (not TPMS) is lit up in the instrument cluster. I have 16k on the other 3 tires. I'm going in for service in a few weeks and going to see what the dealer's take is on it.

I was hoping to get another 10k from all 4 tires and then switchover to get flats. I guess I will have to buy 4 regular tires and keep the rft as a spare (i have an extra wheel).

So what happened?

I had no problem with my winter swap - I just swapped the cut one, and no problems / driving difference what so ever.

Now I've got a bubble on one of my summer tires. Tires have about 7,500 miles on them, and lots of tread depth (I only run them for 7 months). I slipped a penny in there and I've got almost 6/32 of tread depth.

I'd ask my dealer, but they've only proven they don't know ANYTHING.

What's the consensus now? With 3-5000 miles, no brainer - just swap the tire. But at what point should I consider swapping 2 or 4?

Made the swap. No problems whatsoever.

I'd say I was only 1 or 2 32nds off, but I think even if it were more, it'd be fine.

Hi; I just bought a 2009 BMW 328i XDrive and was looking for a set of snow tires for the upcoming winter.
My brother has a set from his 2008 BMW 328i that he can sell me for cheap.
But, when I was talking to BMW about this, he told me i cannot put the snow tires from a 328i on to a 328i XDrive???
Is this true, or is he trying to sell me his BMW Winter Tire Package???
Thanks for any help.

I don't see why the set from your brother's car won't be fine for your car. I think the dealer was just trying to get you to buy a set from them.

Agreed you cannot put a 328i Snow into 335i. But 328i to 328i xdrive should not be a problem.

OK, thanks for the input guys!

Anyone know of a good place in the Toronto area to get Aluminum rims and run flat snows at a decent price.
They can be OEM rims or replica rims with the BMW centre cap.

don't know if tire rack ships to toronto, but the MSW type 14 in 16" is $94, and the Rial Salerno is $109 each. Both center caps can be swapped out with standard bmw center caps. you just missed the sale on the Salernos. it was $69/wheel.

here is my Salerno 16" with BMW center cap with snow tires.

Tire Rack does ship to Canada, check Gary's profile on here and if you order, order through his link so e90post gets credit.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/member.php?u=14657

I haven't used them yet since I bought these this spring, but this winter will be my first winter with it. I like most of the Rials and MSWs because there is no need for a centering ring. I had to use centering rings on my last car with some enkei wheels and i hated it.

the Rials do need new lug bolts, but if you get the MSW, it'll use the stock lugnuts. I got the Rials because they were on sale for $69.

that reminds me, i need to go put some poorboy's wheel sealant on those babies before winter hits.
