ISTA-D says Auto gearbox on manual car + TCU fault code

This is actually on an e82 but I'm posting here since the e90 forum is a bit more active and the same concepts should apply.

I recently picked up a 2011 128i with a manual transmission. I'm fairly confident this was an original manual car for a couple of reasons: VIN decoder websites list it as a manual. I also ran some other reports that show for-sale ads of this car when it was nearly brand new and it was manual. Also, I dont see $205 on the list of FA/VO codes from both the CAS and NFRM.

However, the weird thing is... when I launch ISTA-D it lists the car as AUTO gearbox. Furthermore, in ISTA-D I get a fault code for being unable to communicate with the transmission control unit.

My question is this: If the FA/VO do not list automatic transmission, why does ISTA (or the car itself) think there is an auto transmission? For good measure, I tried coding the CAS and NFRM again just to be safe. I also tried coding the JBE and DSC modules to defaults as well. Made no difference.

Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks

EDIT: Here is the output trace of the VO/FA just in case that helps:
Code:

Go into inpa > msd80/msd81 > status analog/digital values > vehicle options > if automatic transmission is still displayed then clear the value.

The above may not be entirely 100% correct progression to get to the vehicle options menu since I haven't done that swap in a while but if ista still shows auto transmission then you need to clear the vehicle option value with inpa. That should fix your problem. Cant comment on why that happened but very strange forsure

Thanks for the tip. Very strange... I went into INPA and checked and it says "NO" next to "Automatik gear box." Also tried clearing that just in case. But ISTA-D still shows AUTO and shows a nonexistent EGS module as failed.

I have no idea why ISTA-D thinks this.

EDIT: Is it possible that the DME was maybe swapped or flashed with the wrong ZB file and needs to be reprogrammed?
