I know of a 2019 G05 in Texas, but it wasn't a simple OTA update but rather a last-ditch fix at the dealership while undergoing warranty repairs, because the traditional steps weren't working.

I got it the other month, obviously at the dealer and not OTA. Have not noticed any differences.

if you have an Amazon account, can you confirm whether or not Alexa in-car integration works? the guy in Texas says it does, and the only variable I could deduce was that his iStep is 03/2021 while many of us are still on 07/2020 or 11/2020.

I just set it up and it works great. Unfortunately I told the wife and she freaked out and said I have to delete it due to privacy concerns.

my car is 11/2020 and was built end of February just prior to the change. I had heard that there is not much to it and that it could be some time. Just curious who has seem it pop up to update.

Got the upgrade

I recently took my vehicle to the dealer and they did the upgrade to 03/2021. I was on 07/2020 so I have noticed some changes. Namely the instrument cluster shows the battery regeneration for the comfort mode, not just eco pro (I have a 2021 with the mild hybrid battery). Also, I just set up Alexa and it works as advertised and I believe far better and more useful than "hey BMW". I took my vehicle in because of the bass cutting out occasionally issue and multiple phone disconnects on wireless CarPlay. The BMW genius at my dealer suggested I upgrade the Idrive software to see if the issues were software related. Thus far things are working well, so fingers crossed.

2019 G05. It did an over the air upgrade from 3/2019.42 to 7-2019-55. But no notices since then. I took it in for the recall and a inop Driver Recognition Camera 2 weeks ago. I told the service advisor that one of the reasons I bought the car was the promise of Android Auto. They upgraded the software to 3/2021.50.

I now have Android Auto, can open close windows with voice commands but I did not get the highway map display in the instrument panel even though I have the Pro option. The driver assist works a lot better and does not kick out under 40 mph. I am trying to find a release note for this new software to see what else is new.

while OTA updates are fairly straightforward, 11/2020 only recently showed up for OTA updates here in the U.S. 3 months ago, so I don't think we can expect to see 03/2021 OTA pop up for anyone here yet (but maybe as early as July). as of now, 03/2021 requires some in-depth ISTA programming and eSys coding know-how. it continues to appear some US owners are only getting the upgrade as part of their service for troublesome issues.

My turn for a function check request on 03/2021 please. What happens with automatic front and rear camera views as you shift into reverse and then into drive? Does it follow the gear or still sticks to only rear camera view?

It’s working fine on 03/2021.40 in my 45e. But I had no problems with 07/2020 either.

Ive had my G05 for almost a year now (late 2019 model).
I have never performed any upgrade whatsoever - does that seem right??
Is the vehicle supposed to tell me when an upgrade is available automatically??
When I check the My BMW app it simply says 'No remote upgrade available'......

Sorry for the noob question!!

EDIT : Just watched the BMW How To video
Still strange how Ive had no update ever since Ive owned the vehicle though.....service due in August so will let the dealer do it!

For those that are still on 7/2020, my service manage told me that to go to the latest 3/2021, you must first go from 7/2020 to 11/2020 and then to 3/2021 or it will not update. That doesn't explain why everyone was not informed of an update from 7/2020 to 11/2020. Best i know for now.
I'm just going to hold tight at 11/2020, I have no problem at all with my X5 to date.

did he say that specifically about OTA updates? i wanna say there have been folks who skipped iStep versions, but at the dealership because of ongoing service issues, or maybe not. (i'm not certain what method is used at the dealerships.)

i've been on 11/2020 since i took delivery of my 45e last Dec, but i don't expect to get notification of the 03/2021 OTA update any time soon. like you mentioned, some folks on 07/2020 still haven't received an update notification to 11/2020. nobody has been able to ascertain the exact methodology BMW uses when pushing OTA updates to us. it's obviously not a very good or reliable system in terms of rollout.

Mine stays in reverse until it shuts off after driving 50 yards or so forward....

The release notes in the link I posted above say the following:
Quote:
Vehicles with software versions older than 20-07 can only install the latest version after downloading and installing the intermediate versions. Only the next possible upgrade is offered for installation in the vehicle. The customer can never install a wrong version.
This seems to imply that newer versions allow you to jump multiple releases

I think what it means is that the vehicle is only supposed to show you the next update up from wherever you are at so (according to BMW) there is no risk of skipping intermediate updates and screwing things up.

Sounds like updates are only incremental, you cannot just install the latest one that is out and be done with it.

At least, that's the way I read it :-)

My service manager was referring to OTA updates. But was very clear that updates CANNOT be skipped, so depending on how old a version in in a particular vehicle had, it has to be updated step by step from oldest to newest. Of course we have no idea of what a service tech is doing when he is in your car. I too have been on 11/2020 since I took delivery. What I'm more curious about is what, if any, bug fixes are in the new version 3/2021.

It may be that *a particular* sequence of OTA (or even manual) updates cannot be skipped; this is usually because of a) a major change in software data structures/layout in a particular version, or b) the update process itself being updated.

But it is absolutely not true that EVERY OTA update must be major version-sequential. An example on point is that my car that is still on 11/2019 was offered both 07/2020 OTA (which I let time out) and then offered 11/2020 OTA (which I also let time out).

Does the Alexa integration control car features (e.g. set temperature, lighting color, etc.) or does it just enable access to general Alexa features? I use the in car system for car functions but, since I have CarPlay enabled, use Siri for other things. That said, I use Alexa for home automation so that part would be nice.
