Have a '17 pre-LCI also so I'm wondering why you need to update to the latest ISTEP?

My '17 runs perfectly well on whatever software it came with. I no longer have warranty due to the age of the car but still have free servicing up until December when it will be five years old. I happily told the service advisor I am running BM3 and not to touch any software on the car. They still do the oil and other mechanical services but no "updates". His response..."awesome, how do you like it?" |

I didn’t notice much difference in steering when I had the dealer update mine, but the difference in traction control behavior alone was worth it. Prior to the update the car was quick to pull power even in Sport+, now it allows for much more wheelspin.

I felt the on center feel of the car was a tad better but yes most of the difference i also felt on the dsc behavior. Made the car much more fun!

You can update individual modules and leave the DME on the original update level, without risking locking up OBD flashing.

If I understood this thread correctly if I'm buying a used M2 and the dealership applied an update for the previous owner it could be encrypted like the modern ones and unable to be tuned?
I want to have the option of tuning for this dreaded issue https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1699999 To get a manual transmission I will have to travel to Germany and import one. If I'm there with limited resources and barely knowing the language how could I determine this. Can you possibly get the version from the iDrive, and compare against some known list? |
