Any reason to keep TPMS with non-runflats
I'm considering replacing my OEM runflats and wheels with non-runflats. Given that I will be getting new wheels, do I need to spring for the TPMS sensors or not? I mean, since the tires aren't run-flats, it will be obvious if one is flat...don't need a sensor to tell me that.
Maybe more importantly, if I don't get the TPMS sensors, can the TPMS on the car be deactivated so I don't get the warning light? Thanks |

personally i think having non runflats is a good enough reason to have them. Most of us (actually i think all of us) got shafted in not getting a spare tire so its at least nice to know when you go below 30psi if you have a slow leak so you can get it checked out.
if you don't get tpms its fine, you'll just have to deal with the warning lights that pop up. they aren't TOO annoying but i don't think you can disable the system. let me tell you even after 6 months of not having them on my summers... its been so nice not having the warning lights come on in the last few days since i got my winters put on. |

quick Q for those " ! " signs... do they only indicate TPMS errors or do they also detect other errors?
I mean, what if you dont have TPMS and have that "!" sign all the time and something other than TPMS is wrong.. and you dont know it?

I think it's a good idea to switch or get a second set of TPMS for your new set of wheels.
TPMS has actually saved the non RFT tires on our E60 5 series here at the office. While on the freeway the TPMS warning came on so we pulled off and noticed the tire was a bit low. Changed out the tire to our spare and drove back to our warehouse. After inspecting our tire we found a sizable nail in the tread. We removed the nail, installed a plug, and presto saved our tire. So in short, I think TPMS is a good investment and it's standard on your car, why drive around with that annoying warning light? Not will it only potentially save tires, it'll definitely lessen the chance you'll be driving a flat tire on your new wheels.

I learned to compromise a lot with BMW....new car with a constant ! on it because a tail light is out. Yellow service coming on every time the car is started, yet the car just left the dealership. Dealer explains it's normal. I've never had a car with TPMS nor runflats before, never got a flat in all the years I've been driving. When I got my snows and rims, I opted for no TPMS. In this economy, saving $200 is a good thing. The TPMS didn't even let me know that the rears went from 35 to 25 psi, so I'm not even sure what exactly they're supposed to do. Since then, I check the tires every week and fill accordingly with my compressor at home.
