Wind noise / whistle on 2022 X3 M40i

Hi All,

Day two of ownership and I'm totally in love with the car, however I have a high pitched whistle / wind noise which I can't currently locate. Generally starts above 40mph and gets worse the faster you go.

It sounds to me like it's coming from the nearside mirror but can't be 100%.

I've had a good look around both mirror housings, windscreen trim and panoramic roof and can't see anything obvious.

Anyone else have this issue? If so what was the cause and more importantly the fix?

Thanks.

Not heard anything on mine. I’ve got my first motorway trip tomorrow, I’ll have a listen out to mine. I hope I don’t hear anything!

I think there was a thread about this, the owner found out it was the door seal that was not installed properly. That might be the cause. Maybe check it to make sure?

Ahh ok good shout, I hadn't checked the door seal. I'm assuming it'll be obvious when I found it.

Get some scotch tape and start taping area until the sound goes away. Good places to start are the mirror cap. Turn signal on mirror cap. Windshield trim on left and right.

I was experiencing excessive wind noise on my 2019 from the driver side mirror/speaker area. I didn’t think they’d find the issue but sure enough they did. If you have a good tech I bet he or she will fix it. Good luck!

might also get them to check that the window is closing to the proper amount (not too little or too much)

Hi OP.

Is the 'wind' noise constant, or does its tone change with gear changes? This might be more noticeable when the box changes down on the approach to a junction or roundabout - a bit like a turbo spinning faster, then slowing.

Had what I thought was wind noise on a 9 month old X3 I bought used (ex-management car) and after 2 weeks took to my local dealer. After nearly an hour of investigation by the lead technician, he concluded it was the differential. At the time the dealer had seen only one similar problem with a new 5 series.

Diff replaced under warranty in a matter of days, problem gone.

Your's may be quite simple and not the worst case scenario as mine was as I believed my noise was a piece of trim or similar out of alignment, but sometimes you need to consider other options.

Let us know the outcome.

Check the front of sunroof (get on the roof). There is a seal between the roof and glass. My dealer changed mirror, door seal but nothing worked. I found a wind noise thread (Can't remember and find it now) - the op described a huge space towards the side of the car, most likely from the shrunk seal (he posted a photo). And I found one on my car too. I pointed out to the service manager. The noise has been gone since that seal is replaced. Good luck!!

For me its coming from the aftermarket mirrors. Whistle noise from the M horn. But its only notable when the window is open. So Im not sure its the same thing for you OP since its coming inside the cabin.

You didn't mention - so I'll ask - have you installed anything on the exterior of the car? Cross-bars or bike/kayak/luggage rack?

I had the same thing on my 2019 msport I think I mentioned it on here at the time . As soon as I was around 50 mph I got whistling noise from around the drivers window. It was from the door mirror the garage told me it was not seated properly even though it looked ok to me. Not had a problem with it since. Hope this helps.

Nothing aftermarket fitted. Everything is as it was from factory.

Ok that's interesting. You've also got the pano roof haven't you?

I spent 2 hours yesterday with masking tape trying to identify the source and failed to find it.

Noise has no bearing on gear changes or anything else mechanical. It's definitely wind causing it. Just can't figure out where yet.

Can you not take a picture of the area to help this people. It will be easier for them rather than guessing which area you meant.

Its not just the M40i the 4 cylinder also has a wind noise. There’s a reviewer on the tube and the first thing he mentions is the wind noise whistling sound coming from he feels near the drivers side speaker area corner. Sounds like a known issue.
