Exclamation Noisy Brakes!

Just picked up a '19 M5 Comp (~29K miles) and the brakes (non-CCB) are pretty loud when coasting to a stop, especially once they're warmed up.

It's SO embarrassing (and annoying) for a $120K+ car!

Planning on taking it to the dealer to have it checked out.

Is this a common issue and what are some solutions to resolve this?

Thanks in advance!

So, just live with it? Any aftermarket options?

I have a 19 M5 Comp with CCBs and it's just as embarrassing. Dealer says it's completely normal and even showed me in the owners manual where it states excessive brake noise is expected or something along those lines I have seen people on the forums mention aftermarket brake pads that can help eliminate some of that noise but can't recall the manufacture.

BMW performance brakes make noise. It's well known, yet still annoying.

You can try different pads, or maybe some shims. Other than that, not much you can do.

Also, I really hope you didn't pay $120k for a '19 M5.

Very normal. There are other pad options, I just don't know about warranty issues with aftermarket pads. Not saying it would be a problem, but I have no experience there. I've always run stock pads, and even though the squeaking can sometimes be annoying, I'd rather just live with it. I luckily do almost all highway driving anyways, and only hear it sparingly when around town.

Some seem to squeal while some do not. Seems to be luck of the draw. I guess you did not notice this when you test drove the car.

Don't be embarrassed. Get Educated.. Learn the science

The squealing is coming from excess dust.

You see.. these brakes create a lot of dust.. bc great stopping power happens at the expsense of great friction.

when you brake mildly it is still kicking up a lot of dust but not producing much heat..

the dust then accumulates on the pads.. then when you brake moderately again it creates a squeal

by you complaining about squeal tells me you arent driving ot braking aggressively, and you are babying the car . these things are aggressive and should be driven so

NOW, go out drive your car and stand on the brake pedal at 60mph

the heat will burn off that squeak dust and your car's brakes wont squeal again letting fellow commuters know you drive your m5 like a granny.

this will keep them quiet for 15-20 soft braking episodes or maybe a few days

Wait… the dealer converted your car to drum brakes? That's definitely a first 😂

The brakes on an 1950KG 625hp M5 are 'Performance' orientated.
That means they are high friction and designed to be used hard.
They can squeal when used too gently/not enough.
You need to get some heat in them to deglaze the pads/discs.
Can try a light smear of brake assembly grease on any contact areas between the pad backing and caliper holder. This can mute out high frequency vibrations. But this will attract even more brake dust!

Mine just started squeaking in the past couple weeks, a ‘21 w/ 12,5k miles.

My 3 prior ///Ms squeaked most of my ownership.

Man you drank all the BMW kool-aid before you posted that huh?

Riddle me this Batman, how can plenty of other American and German performance cars not do this while our M5s do do this? It's not like our brakes are leaps and bounds better.

I don't want to "stand" on my executive sport saloon's brakes, I want it to do what I paid it to do and be a silent killer.

OP, I went with this option:

ACG brake pads vs. stock https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1654918

You'll read about mixed results. I've had significantly reduced brake squeal and a small but noticeable reduction in brake dust. Just make sure you bed them properly.

OP,
You need to bed in the brakes. Get the vehicle up to 80 mph and hit the brakes hard bringing it down to 20 mph and repeat for a few times. Do not let the vehicle come to a complete stop. Check your rearview make sure no one is behind you.

I've switched to EBC brake pads YELLOW. The best decision I've made, I was annoyed of those squeaky brakes. Haven't felt any performance issues whatsoever compared to the original pads

Thanks for the advice!

No way I paid $120K; was just quoting the sticker.
