Trunk lid does not open fully after pull

Problem is the trunk lid does not open automatically after a light pull..used to before..I think its the gas struts on the sides..any ideas if warranty covers it?

I was having the same problem on my '09 335i but the advisor was trying to convince me it was "normal" even though I showed him it was not opening fully after pulling as it used to

After insisting, he called a Technician who saw the problem then compared it to another 3-series near by and immediately told the advisor to request both shocks/springs be replaced (2 51-24-7-250-308 GAS PRESSURIZED SPRING F)

After getting the shocks/springs replaced, the trunk now opens perfectly

I guess the easy way out it to tell the customer it's working as expected when it's not

Sooo is it supposed to pop up after hitting the release? Mine just releases and I have to manually pop it up...

The lid should raise on it's own after an initial pull. There's a point somewhere around 3-6 inches above the closed position where the gas shocks should engage (overcome resistance) and force the trunk lid all the way open.

My trunk lid has gotten lazy also. Cold weather will have some effect on this, but mine displays this same issue in warm weather as well. I'll probably mention this to the SA on my next service visit.

Yeah mine only raises about 1-2 inches then just sits there...like the lazy bum that it is. But out of warranty and it doesn't really bother me...well until I found out it wasn't working right!

My trunk lid NEVER opened on it's own from new. I pop the trunk, it unlatches & pops up about 1/2", but I have to manually open from there...

Here all this time, I thought that was just another one of those things with BMW - guess I'll have to mention it next time car is in for service.

Mine has never opened up after popping it, since new. My other car doesn't do that either. I actually don't believe a trunk is supposed to open wide after popping it.

this thread is 3 y.o., so when you think about it, the OP's car was only 1-1 1/2 y.o. at the time.

The lid is not supposed to open fully if all you do is hit the release button, but after it has been raised by hand past a certain resistance point, the gas shocks should take over and raise it the rest of the way. This is a common configuration across a wide range of marques and a behavior that my rig very definitely displayed until the last few months. I'm not losing sleep over it, but it's something that "worked" before that doesn't now.

Hold on a minute, so you guys are saying that when you push the button to open the trunk from the cabin, the trunk should lift up 2" - 3" and you just have to lightly pull it up? I've had my E90 for 2 freaking years and my trunk would just make the unlocking sound and would just sit there, I have to pull the heavy shit all the way up. I didn't know it came up by itself (sort of).
I'm brining my car in for AC problem, I'll mention something to them about the trunk problem.

Well there is an update gas spring if you look at realoem.com so maybe that solved the problem.

Not exactly, take a look at what zzzbullseye said earlier for a better explanation:

zzzbullseye: "the lid is NOT supposed to OPEN FULLY if all you do is hit the release button, but after it has been raised BY HAND past a certain resistance point, the gas shocks should take over and raise it the rest of the way."

The shocks are covered by the standard and extended warranty.
For those without warranty, I Googled P/N 51-24-7-250-308 and found them for $30/ea.

For those of you with good or new gas struts on your trunk, have you noticed it is much more difficult to close the trunk (the correct way, from underneath, not touching the paint, no no). Any options to make it easier for my wife to close the trunk without touching the paint. Thanks Chris

Just had my shocks replaced today when I had my rig in for the 30k mile service - the lid is raising like it's supposed to again I always grab the lower lip of the license plate frame to pull down the lid. I would say that even if you don't have a frame, you could still apply pressure to the plate to close the lid...anything's better than just grabbing the lid itself.
