Maybe I'm just getting old, but…

I am very pleased, surprisingly pleased, with the power of the 45e on pure EV. I’ve yet to come across a situation where I haven’t been able to accelerate nicely (keeping up with traffic) solely under electric power in my local driving.

BMW have done an excellent job balancing the attributes of the 45e.

Yup, sounds like you’re old! And I’m in the same boat with you. 45e has great quick torque in electric only, and that gets you there.

What's up with the members of this forum? Midlife crisis? Depression? Extended Covid-19 epidemic exposure? Lately, I see a post mentioning "being old" almost everyday. Come on boys&girls! No one is old here!!

I’m confused. Are talking age or speed limit?

Because certainly in the X5 60mph absolutely feels like 40mph!

The average *new* car buyer is 53 years old. Cars are expensive these days. These products aren't really designed for a young market.

Here's what happens when you're about to turn 70. First of all, you deny it because no one wants to be 70, except the alternative is worse.

Then you look around at all of the things that give you pleasure in life and you realize you're part of the lucky (or blessed) ones depending on your perspective.

If you got this far then you've already gone through probably 20 cars since you've been 16 from junkers to true sports cars. And you reach a point where loading up a car with options for something that depreciates by half in 3 years is not for you. But you don't begrudge anyone else for doing it because you've done it and it's thrill to get those tartufo comfort seats.

And then you start looking for a car that ticks new boxes better than those that you have had, and you come to LarsOtium and the rest of us who have concluded that we want to try the 45e. It's the only thing that is truly different out there (and probably best in its class) if you want a great power train plus EV, and you're not ready for full EV.

One last thing, which I mentioned in a different post, I don't want to wash, wax, claybar, etc. any more...so we're looking at ceramic coatings, not because we want that "candy coated shine" (I don't want to drive an M & M ) but it's just easier to maintain.

My tribute to getting older.

In my limited experience with Plugin Hybrids (Chevy Volt), the electric engine is quick and gets you off the line like a dragster. With the Volt, if you ran out of electric, the IC engine (4 cylinder) was a little bit of a dog, especially on inclines, I bet the 45e is much better in that respect. I do miss the Volt with ~55 miles +/- EV range, was a perfect car for my work commute, I’d only need to fill it up a couple timers a year. When i was looking at the X5, the EV miles I thought was to limiting (in retrospect, being retired now, it probably would have been perfect) and the draw of a TT V8, possible for the last time, was to great.

Gave up on life so early? 24 is no age to be driving an X5. Unless it's your second or third car after a sports car or sporty sedan as your primary. Then it's okay.

Let your grandson take it out for a spin and give us his review on how the 45e accelerates

The ICE turns on quickly, and augments the power if you need it. The pounds/hp is almost exactly the same on the 40i versus the 45e, but the initial torque on the 45e is higher. IMHO, there is no penalty in driving the 45e versus the 40i, especially in the USA where you can often utilize the federal credit, and in some states, the 45e is considerably cheaper than the 40i, and you can use the limited access lanes, which can be a plus. The fact you can often drive for maybe months before you need to fill the tank, for most people, your energy costs are lower, too. What's not to like? The 45e has some things standard that you cannot either get, or are optional on the 40i, assuming you wanted them. There are obviously some minuses, as you can't get certain options on the 45e, regardless (like the spare tire option and a few other things), but if those aren't critical to you, it isn't a big deal.

Never underestimate the minivan. They grow on you, especially with kids. Consider it the sacrificial vehicle that you don't really care about (cleanliness wise.)

Wow, that’s a really interesting statistic I never thought about! I’m just shy of that at 51 myself, and now that I got my first Bimmer and doing some cosmetic & minor performance mods, I smile every time I punch the throttle and think “ why didn’t I do this when I was younger?” Then I quickly realize, “Oh yeah I was poor, working minimum wage, and could barely afford my $800 Ford Maverick!”

Nope, can't do it (and neither can the wife). I've had X6, X5M and X5 as my sacrificial kid cars. And I keep them clean.
