Loud whistle Pass Mirror

My M550 passenger mirror is making a loud/high pitched whistle from 30mph and up. Its the worst at around 60mph. The drivers mirror is dead silent. Its not the window as I tried barely open to all the way open. Definitely the mirror.

Anyone else have this and have a way to fix it ?

Car is going in Friday for new PS4S shoes and inspection sticker, so I can have BMW look at it.

I've definitely read about this issue several times here. You should search and try and find the threads. I think it's pretty common and I'm sure there is a fix.

I did do a search. In fact several of them. In the General and Cosmetic forum areas. I searched for "wind noise", "mirror noise" , "mirror whistle/whistling"

Nothing came up. I even Googled it. One post in the M5 forum came up, but then it was between Driver and Passenger side. And it really wasnt a whistle sound, more of a "groan" they were talking about.

On mine is very high pitched. Its really annoying, but you cant hear it at all with windows up. It might be just a crack getting hit at just the right angle where it whistles. I dont know. I guess I will just have BMW look at it on Friday. Was hoping someone had this, but I cant find it.

Damn I know I've read about others with this exact issue. At least three or four people in the thread I was reading. It remember it. Was a long thread that started out with no one knowing where it was coming from and then it's was determined it was the mirrors. I'll try searching for you tomorrow. It's bugging me now.

Thanks Joe, appreciate it. I've tried searching numerous times going into 3 or 4 pages deep on each. Seems nothing is coming up to what I'm experiencing.

It's definitely speed related as the noise doesnt start "whistling" until you get 30mph or more. Its just annoying hearing that sound while driving with windows down.

Dont dig too deep, its going in Friday for the new tires, etc. I will tell the SA about this on Thursday when I drop the PS4S off w him.

This is really out of left field and probably not it, but have you tried adjusting the mirror positioning to see if it changes? I'm just brainstorming where the air could be moving through to make the whistle…

Thanks! I will check that out today. Not sure if the M550 uses a different mirror than the 520, but I will see if there's a unsealed gap underneath.

No I havent tried adjusting the mirror tilt, but what I will do is fold the mirror (if possible) while driving to see if the whistle goes away.

That's a good idea. Maybe you can at least further isolate where it's coming from.

Try using a small rag and rubber bands or blue painters tape (wrapped around the mirror) to isolate different areas of the mirror housing to try to identify where the sound is coming from.

I'm thinking it could be one of the pieces of door trim or the outer rubber seal on the passenger door....

I have the same issue on the drivers side of my 540. Will be interesting to see what if anything BMW tells you.

Did you ever figure out the reason for the noise? I’m now experiencing the same thing. High pitch whistle start from 40mph.

Maybe ? I put a good coat of wax / polish on the mirror and that seems to have fixed it. I've not heard it whistle like it was. Before it was very high pitched. Now I dont hear it. I folded the mirrors in and out while waxing it up.

Wax up the underneath good and the braces top and bottom.
That seemed to fix it for me.

We also had this, it was raining at the time, but it was just once and it was before we had the paint corrected and the car ceramic coated. So yes, maybe a good wax or coating is all that's needed. We have a long trip planned next week to see if the issue resurfaces.

Ours was drivers side.

Anybody with this issue managed to fix it? On my 540i it's so annoying that is driving me crazy on longer drives.
