Remote Software Update and WiFi
Please let me know how one is doing the updates. Do we need to have vehicle wifi plan enabled for this to work all the time?
I had initial 3 month data plan for at&t at last upgrade. Before that, I thought it uploaded software directly. Do you have renewed wifi plan on vehicle or how is it done? Thanks.

The remote software upgrade does not use the vehicle's HotSpot internet connection. The software is downloaded to your phone and then you connected it the phone to the vehicle using bluetooth and WiFi (think CarPlay connection) and it is transferred to the vehicle.

Thanks all for the feedback.
I think I just carried by fact that I wanted to do it quick and didn't drive on last two updates versus initial ones. Last time, I got AT&T 3-month free plan to get around!!! I acted too quick between update availability notice and car upload without driving. No need to have WIFI for this need. Yesterday, I went out with WIFE to get ChickFilA sandwich, in about 15-minute round trip, it uploaded update from phone to car. Actual vehicle update took less than 10 minutes.

TurtleBoy I just did the 11/2021.50 yesterday. It was still loaded to my phone first, then transferred to my X5 after connecting the phone via Bluetooth and WiFi.

The version each of you were on prior to the update could be a factor also.

Yes, I was also on 07/2021 prior to the update. I do use Android Auto but my experience on the prior update was the connection had to be changed to enable the transfer from the phone and the transfer had to be pushed by me. I wonder if the MyBMW app functionality has changed in this regard.

I'm not familiar with the AA connection. For CarPlay it is connected by Bluetooth and WiFi so there is nothing that needs to be done on order for the update to be transferred to the vehicle. Who knows, maybe that is the determiner, if a person is constantly using AA then the OTA goes directly to the vehicle. Or it is just luck of the draw. Hopefully as the OTAs roll out we have more folks chiming in with how they got the update and what they use (AA, CarPlay or neither).

When I just remote updated and now the Remote Start is not working, so guess I need to go to the service center to get it fixed. Seems like I always have issues with remote down loads.

You need to enable it again. Updates clear out the checkbox. It is in the Climate menu.

it's a known 'issue' (among others) and addressed in the general notes for RSU and shouldn't require a service visit. after an update, i simply go through all my settings again. 'tis a minor inconvenience
