I actually wanted to go watch the Formula-E Grand Prix at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, but the medical restrictions that made me give up driving/working competition events also prevents me from attending as a spectator. (Just kill me already, doc!)

The people of Brooklyn allow the Formula-E races because the cars are quiet, and would never allow ICE vehicles to race there.....

All the new EVs also have some weird ass sounds they are trying to market as being cool. In reality it just sounds corny and try-hard. Taycan, i4, idgaf, their fake cabin acceleration sounds are god awful.

Thankfully OEMs like BMW and Porsche dont pump fake engine sounds into the cabins of their ICE cars...Oh wait...

LOL, i know right? It is as lame in the EVs as it is in the M3/4.

On your friend, sorry he died but he missed it anyway. If sound was your concern then you lost the plot on F1 ages ago, and when I mean ages ago I mean decades.

Until 2005 the rule was displacement, so makers could play with configurations. In the 90s you had V12s and then to V10s. I was working on a team for a vintage race and got to be on the pit wall when the 19k 3l V10 went screaming past, it was a banshee. In 05 everyone had to go to NA V8s, then the boosted V6s in 2014. The sound has been changing in F1 since 1953 and the old farts will always tell you their era was better.

BTW everyone knows the real porn for EV people is the 1/8th trap speeds, gotta love all that torque.

Monaco is on my bucket list, was supposed to go for my 60th Birthday which is on Race Weekend usually, but then Covid. Still want to go as does my wife. We may just make it happen for next year.

Regarding Formula E.....I just don't get it. I won't be able to articulate exactly why but will give it a shot. There is something missing, the engineers and mechanics work to tweek and find every mechanical advantage within a set of parameters that are dictated by the race body. They play with and bend the rules where ever they can to gain advantage.

I don't see the same thing with EV's, sure they will find aero etc but to me an electric motor isn't the same as ICE. I'm old, someone will likely tell me it's the same only different, but I just don't feel it. After all, isn't this about personal emotion, feeling the sport.

EV is like Moto2 right now, there isnt much you can do with the powerplant. That is why they are trying to put more tactics in like the "attack mode" but Im like you, it hasnt gotten me yet. It feels more like they are trying to make it a video game, guess to attract a younger crowd (being said the ZONES in F1 are not that different).

Honestly, I dont get emotional about them either. Being in a really fast EV is fun because its a damned cheat code. 1000hp, immediate torque that feels like you got hit from behind like a train and tie fighter noises are fun but that is basically it.

But I like Jay Lenos approach to it "Bring it on! The sooner the better!" Why? Because the more people drive them now the longer we will have gas to keep the really cool cars going. ICE cars will become like horses, instead of being used purely for labor the only ones left will be ones kept out of love.

EV's make up a very very small portion of vehicles worldwide, very small. While they may be the future, ICE vehicles are going to be around for a LONG time. Toyota wouldn't invest almost $400 million into 4 cylinders for no reason...

Vehicle sound generators are required by law in new EVs here, so that pedestrians can hear them while staring at their smartphones. BMW added it for the 2020 model year i3's, and it can be coded as module VSG01:

https://bmwi.bimmerpost.com/forums/s....php?t=1696251

Personally, I want to monetize the function like old-school cell phone ringtones. Instead of a whining sound, why not let the driver download an F1 engine revving, diesel locomotive, open-header V8, or Harley Davidson motorcycle sound instead?

Racing and sex are not spectator sports. If you've never been in the driver's seat, you can't truly understand either.

There are many spec-racer series out there, where everyone is driving an identical car and actual driver skill determines who wins. I've driven in many events where my butt was soundly kicked and I was left wondering if the problem was the loose nut behind the wheel (me) or the car. That's what a spec series is all about, since everyone is driving identical cars. Sorta like restrictor plate races in NASCAR, where many fans find it boring but it shows who the best drivers are.

Formula-E has things that seem like they are copied from video games, like needing to drive off-line to trigger a limited "attack mode" for a brief performance boost. It adds a level of strategy to the race, and I imagine it also appeals to the video game generation.

I'd personally love to turn off the video game stuff and run a few laps in a Formula-E car, just to see how my driving fares against the pack. Ten years ago, I might have even tried to put together a full racing team to run the complete international series.....

At what point do you just take the driver out and put him in a simulator cockpit? All that would be missing is the G forces. They're already testing pre-programmed "AI" driven F1 style cars. What's at the end of this stupid rabbit hole?

Tesla already did this with some "boombox" feature they launched not that long ago. Basically let you play whatever sounds you wanted from the pedestrian speaker. Unfortunately shortly after launch they had to kill it and only allow it while parked. I don't recall the reason, but I'm sure stupid people had something to do with it.
