Fuel Tank Warranty Extension

I received a letter yesterday from BMW extending the fuel tank warranty to 15 years/150k miles. The supposed issue is a potential leak at the location where a plastic cover plate is welded after assembly into the vehicle, apparently susceptible to later damage. The remedy is replacing the fuel tank.

Any experience/additional info among the group here?

Very exciting

I can't wait to get the letter. Does this mean that I have to keep the car for 15 years?

By coincidence, I had a previously scheduled annual service appointment for today. While they did oil, coolant, brake/clutch fluid, they checked for telltale signs of streaking from fuel drips down the side of the tank. No evidence of a problem but, I am still a few hundred miles shy of 20k over almost 8 years, so it’s had a low-stress existence so far. SA says it’s a heat-related deterioration problem for a seal on top.

Would it be safe to assume an obvious symptom could be along the lines of excessive fuel odor in cabin that was not present prior?

Unlike an engine compartment fuel leak, I am not certain that the odor would necessarily penetrate the passenger compartment. I would expect an odor in the garage if parked inside. If parked outside, it may volatilize before collecting enough to create any odor.

I've never heard of a fuel tank related failure in all my years on this forum.

LOL. I think it's safe to assume anyone that owns a 2 series that is within the range of this recall and BMW can find you, you're getting a letter.

How strange, I received the letter on Saturday and today I filled the car up and noticed an extremely strong gasoline smell in my garage. Took a look at the gas tank and fuel is seeping down the driver's side rear of the tank. Wtf.

EDIT: For reference I have a 2014 M235i with just under 60,000 miles at the time of this issue.
