"Overall, the driving experience of the XM is not overly engaging, but thatís mostly by design. BMW engineers emphasized the M lounge experience of the XM, catering to a clientele with deep pockets and luxury tastes."

Uh oh. BMW has always been first about the driving EXPERIENCE. if the XM is diverging from that, it's impending disaster

Even my X7 is all about a masterful driving experience. I hope the XM isn't different

Honestly, the incessant whining from you crowd. Just looking at a few reviews randomly:

Motor1 - "I appreciate the XM's powertrain, despite my brief time with it. But I adored the electric power-assisted steering from the first turn. The XM may still be in development, but it already has potentially the best steering of any BMW in over a decade and that's because it so clearly mimics older BMWs."

CNET - "BMW says the XM has a perfect 50/50 weight balance, and this SUV's on-road composure is indeed one of its best attributes. Hard launches, harder stops (thanks, 20-inch steel brakes), throwing it into tight bends -- nothing can upset the XM's balance."

Top Gear - "How's the handling?
Pretty astonishing, frankly. 48-volt anti-roll bars keep the high-riding body freakishly flat as the XM is hurled from corner to corner. It's so good, you wonder if they couldn't get away with softening the ride off a tad more in a straight line, to keep up the comfort end of the XM's bargain."

ICE cars are going away so I kind of get that BMW has to go a completely new direction with the M brand. Itís just not something I want to be a part of but Iím sure clients will line up.

If they had just called it the X9, perhaps the expectations would have been different.

So they decided this platform is where they should debut their best steering system even though we have been voicing our displeasure with the shortcomings of the current system.

My RWD 3'er doesn't have 50/50 weight distribution yet this monstrosity is deemed more deserving. I am not the target demographic and feel this is a waste of resources. The target demographic for this monstrosity more than likely wouldn't even care about weight distribution or steering feel yet this is the car where they made those attributes a priority.

Apparently you haven't read/heard the reviews of the new M3/M4/M5 I take it? They have been WIDELY lauded as one of, if not the best performing vehicles in their class. Not sure why you think prioritizing performance in this vehicle inhibits BMW from prioritizing elsewhere. And if the target demo "doesn't value" it, then surely that will be reflected in sales figures. Based on the sales of the BMW's M SUVs however, I'm sure they will do just fine.

When will we learn how this stacks against a cayenne turbo gt/rsq8/urus?

Until then, this is just a big luxury suv, like everyone else makes.

Design wise, the concept looks exciting. Seems to have a monolithic design language (like the new range rover and the 7er), but with a lot more aggressive touches. I'm excited!

I'm also curious, although the Cayenne especially will be tough to beat. I forget which outlet posted it, but the Cayenne Coupe beat the G80 on the track.

It's an oxymoron to label any suv as if it has to do anything with M but it's just Money/Marketing

Mark my words, there will be lines to get one of these. Hell my dealer had a deposit back in March for the first one.

I don't know. I feel odd about this.

On one hand, M means track, speed, dynamics, etc. But a current M car, regardless of the one you choose, isn't really meant to be a track animal anymore. They are far too mainstream. And that's fine with me.

And then on the other hand, I'll be in my M3 and think "An X3 M sure would be nice." The room, the additional comfort without much lose of speed. But I can never get fully comfortable in an SUV around a turn like I can in a sedan. Maybe it's just me.

At any rate, I see no problem with the XM. It's a comfortable daily that will be blindingly quick with the latest tech. Save the other garage space for an M2 and you'll be set up.

Not at all. If you drive and compare a standard model to the M variant, they fit the name that goes for cars as well as SUV/SAVs.

I am still trying to figure out what this car is. Is it an X5 M evolved? Is it an X7 M?

When we have an X5 M, is the only incremental value the integration of a hybrid drive train?
