1st time BMW Owner - 3y/36K standard maintenance expiring in a month

Any and all advice appreciated going forward in terms of maintenance (besides being prepared to open my wallet a lot more)? Go find myself a good indy shop? Be diligent about fuel additives, etc? Thanks in advance.

In general they are less expensive but depending on your area and your dealer you may find there is not a lot of difference in what the dealer and indy's charge. If you are comfortable with an indy that does BMW then you should be fine.

No need to use fuel additives if you already are using Top Tier fuel. If you aren't then it may not be a bad idea to throw some in every once and awhile.

The dealer I use for service, Sun Motors in Mechanicsburg, PA, offers a $99 oil change. This is actually on par with what a place like Jiffy Lube charges for a synthetic change that requires almost 7 quarts of oil so I will likely continue to use Sun Motors for this type of service. I have a friend with a lift so I'll probably perform a brake fluid change in 2 years if I still have the X5. The dealer performed this at my free 3 yr annual service. I'll also change the cabin filter and engine air filter myself at about 30K miles.

From what I can read for G05, the maintenance schedule looks like this:

On top of visual inspection of varies items, basically these:
  • every 10k, oil change, cabin filter,
  • every 30K, coolant flush, brake fluid, air filter
  • every 60K, spark plug, fuel filter

that's it??? Brakes and tires will be on demand based on driving style. Does BWM recommend tire rotation for square setup? In general, every 10K rotation/balance is nice to have for any car square setup.

I learned the hard way using jiffy lube is not a good idea on my 3 series

The oem oil change kit the dealers use (as well as my indy bmw shop) not only comes with a filter, but with a replacement oil drain plug.

Your quickie shop will almost certainly reuse the plastic plug as one does not come in the generic kit they use

As you’re probably aware plastic doesn’t exactly hold up over time with the heat generated my the oil and reusing the same plug over and over could conceivably lead to leakage or stripped threads down the line

Wait current model has plastic drain plug??? Doesn’t sound reasonable to me. Because pug needs to be torqued to some value. Plastic plug probably won’t handle that. Older BMW oil kit come with a new crush washer and we reused metal plug.

Quick search here
https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1722708

Plug is metal. The brass washer is crush washer that gets replaced every time you loosen the plug. This is how every car is.

Oh hi that was the M50i V8. Here is in-line 6 B58

BMW dealers are currently offering 3 years of unlimited mileage oil changes for $199.00. Hard to beat that deal.

I think you have to have over 60k miles and vehicle has to be 6 years old. I could be wrong.

In regards to oil changes, isn't it dependent on the computer based on your driving style vs set number of miles/years?

It is condition based but there is also a time limit of 1 year. This way those that don't drive much will still have to get the oil changed once a year.

If you have a Costco Membership, just make sure you always used the 15% coupon when you head to dealership. Not all Indy shops are cheaper.

Owing one outside of warranty, are you planning to wrench on it yourself. With all the computer modules in this thing, just short of standard mechanical stuff, there will be times you will need to go to a Indy or -dealer- for said service outside of warranty. Less than a handful of Indys that I would use around me cost just the same as dealerships , if not more on a oil change as a example...since it's being mentioned in this thread. Great to own while in warranty, it get's expensive if you need to need a Indy for all repairs outside IMO.

Bearing that and the comment about fuel additive (aka, it shows you may not be wrenching yourself), I would highly consider either the BMW extended factory warranty or 3rd party warranty as something to look into and consider if you plan own long term and don't intend to weekend warrior wrench

How does one get one of those coupons at Costco?
