I'm also wondering about this.
Apparently, it's also required to use your phone for the remote start and to lock/unlock your car via phone. My current X3 w/o wireless charging locks / unlocks just fine via the app, and I find it useful for when I forget to lock the car and I'm out of key fob range. I'm going to ask my CA to clarify that today. Can anyone add anything to this? |

I don't believe that the wireless charger is required to lock/unlock/remote start your car. You can do that with the My BMW app. It seems to be required for the "digital key" functions which allow you to start and drive the car by using your phone as the key.
