Question 7 speed DCT tranny

Just saw that a 7spd DCT will be available! Wondering what kind of real world driving affects this will have?? Faster acceleration from shorter gearing in each gear? That's gonna be a LOT of paddle shifting to flip through 7 gears

not shorter gearing in each gear, it's the double clutch, which makes it shift much faster

Any word on how performance will compared to the E90 M3 tranny? Is it the same unit?

That's not necessarily the case. Gearing ratios and/or components could be different.

BMW may well have more than one DCT. I would say it is most likely they do have multiple DCT models then don't.

I believe it is the same DCT like in the M3. Some features (Launch Control) will probably be missing.
Yes it has shorter ratios and zero delay between shift resulting in faster acceleration.
Wanna hear it in action? Check
in 0:21, 0:46, 1:07, 1:49, 2:07 and 2:11.
You can hear the shift are instantaneous. Shifts sound rough like F1 car shifting.

the ratios will definally has an impact on the acceleration. But not as much as the DOUBLE clutch system. i mean the DCT is the major factor, affects more.

I saw the 7 speed system listed but it only called it "Automatic transmision". Is it confirmed that the Z4 will get DCT or is this a full 7-speed automatic like a benz?

What's the shift time on the DCT? Faster than Audi's DCT?

For the Z4 and the 335i in EU which has the DCT available, I believe both paddles do both up and down shifts. I don't think they are dedicated like on the M3.

I've seen M3 reports about dedicated paddles ...
And the change of 335i paddles with the M3 paddles
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4793645

So what's the truth about the factory Z4 paddles ?

Left and right are the same : push to go down and pull to go up the gears, so different from the M3... I prefer them as in they are configured in the M3 but ordered the sportauto anyway.

Ok, have to order the M3 paddles with it, if they fit/work on the 335i DCT, they probably will do the same on the Z4

the audi DCT is known as DSG, and i was told that bmw uses the same blueprints or whatever...

for those asking about how it will drive.. it will be different from the e92 m3... i believe so because in the past ive asked why smg isnt available on z4 or 3 series.. it just doesnt drive as good... so im guessing same thing.

thats pretty cool though, i hope its not as annoying as the SMG they offer now on regular models.. drove a 650 with smg the other week. it was horrible. lol

Actually, it does include the launch control feature. Found this in a recent review.

"To activate the Bimmer’s launch-control program—available only with the dual-clutch gearbox—put the Dynamic Drive Control in sport plus, move the gearshift into manual mode, and floor the brake and gas pedals at the same time. A checkered-flag logo pops up in the small display in the instrument cluster, and the engine revs to 4000 rpm. Let go of the brakes, and the Z4 dashes to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and hits 100 in 12 seconds flat."

For the full review, click here.

0-60 in 4.8 secs.
