Spring Install & Alignment Cost

Fellas, I'm gonna get some springs as part of my X-Mas, and have called two local shops to get an estimate of how much it's going to cost to install.

Frankly, I am a little flabbergasted.

First shop wanted just under $500, which I thought seemed a little excessive. Second shop wanted over $800.....$500 for the install and $300 for an alignment. Neither place was a dealership, and no, it did not include purchasing the springs.

Can this be right?

*Edit*

The $800 place says the factory manual calls for a 5 hour install for both front and rears....and of course they charge about $100/hour. Any suggestions in Houston would be appreciated.

Do it yourself (not that bad), and take it to the dealership to get an alignment, they charged me $150

It's around 150-300 to install springs and 50-150 for alignment depending on where you go...

Realistically, installation at a shop with proper tools should take about 3 hrs max. (I DIY'd mine in 6 hrs w/o a lift or air guns) Provide them with the DIY I wrote in the DIY section. Also you should provide them with the tightening torques I wrote in the Suspension section.

$300 for an alignment is total BS. BMW dealerships charge between $100-$150 depending on your location. And I would recommend getting an alignment at the dealer because they have the proper alignment specifications/machines/tools/techniques.

Also the manual the shop refered to probably indicates time req'd for replacing more components than just the springs. That's why it says 5 hrs.

Do the install yourself. I plan on doing mine sometime in the next few weeks (just got my springs in today).
