Car and Driver: The big three-row luxury SUV has more power and more features, but you'll have to get past the new look. (emphasis mine)

This guy does a great review. Humble- savvy on German cars. I wish Doug Demuro had more focus and elegance like he presents.

Why does the split headlight design look good on this but awful on the 7 series?

Gorgeous car. It's a pity they didn't make it a plug in hybrid too.

It's the bumper design. Over-designed, busy on the the 7er vs. the relatively plain bumper on the X7.

Boy did C&D miss the mark on the V8... it's way more than just a badge change. It's literally a whole new V8, first ever S designated M engine in a non-M car. The V8 is a story in and of itself.

I don't know why BMW has to design cars that
1- Need to grow on people OR
2- Need to look good in person

Why can't they design something that's an instantaneously good looking, likeable or beautiful.

Look at Genesis these days, Audis and Porsches. With few exceptions most of their modern vehicles look nice in pictures and in person. Don't need to grow.

I don't know… I saw the first photos online and ordered one the day the banks opened. I think it looks great.

My main issue is not whether it looks good or bad, it simply isn't anything special. The split headlight design is on a lot of cars already. To me it's ugly, but the rest of the car is great, so just have to overlook it.

He seems to be very cautious with how idrive-8 works (lack of physical button), and how the screens are not really straight (simple because they were added as an afterthought, unlike the 7-series sedan).

At the same time, he is doing his best to stay positive, so he did his best to be be too harsh when hinting on things that he dislikes.

I also agree with his comment about the gear shifter, completely stupid move to replace it by a knob!. I really think BMW has messed up this vehicle in every single change they made (probably with the exception of the redesigned V8 engine, though we are yet to know how reliable it will be).

I was really upset when I realize that he confirmed the fact that mild hybrid with continuous engine on-off cycles can damage the engine (reduce it's reliability) and that BMW had to make some changes to bring the reliability and expected life to where it was without mild hybrid). This means, we as consumers, are paying for a feature that we don't actually need, paying more $s for it, white it barely saves and gas and was rather added to claim lower emissions for regulatory reasons!

They missed the mark with the front end as of late. I truly dislike the split headlights designs, it's a huge turnoff for me. Other than that the cat proportions are fine. The M60 is a beast, too bad they didn't tune it better for the 0-60. For such an engine I was hoping for faster times, sure it's a family hauler but for the engine and it's capability and the weight of the car they could have easily pushed 600hp.

Absolutely couldn't stand the front end design initially especially on non M-Sport 40i's. Seeing one in the flesh (with M-Sport of course) changed that. The previous gen looks dated to me now and like a less attractive X5 (I'm not biased as I do not have an X7 nor have any plans to get one currently). The new design has a lot of presence and I personally think it looks very sharp in the darker colors. Sure there are Hyundais and Jeeps with the split design but it does not mean the components and aesthetics are the same. It's like saying a stitched vinyl dashboard in a Honda is the same as a Nappa leather stitched dashboard in a BMW. It is not.

Pre-LCI the X7 looked like a bland box on wheels

Now it's a bland box on wheels with a demented face.

Save for the Range Rover, I can't think of any full-size SUVs that have enough sex appeal to justify their price.
