Gas vs Diesel?...............
Sorry if already discussed ad nauseum. Has anyone crunched the numbers? I have the 2007 X5 3.0 and was thinking of getting the new diesel. I realize it depends a lot on the price of gas but at what point does the higher cost of diesel outweigh the better mileage? City is most of my miles so I would love to get better mpg around town. Right now I get about 18 in the X5 and 15 in the M3! Not so bad right now with $1.75 gas but who knows what oil will do going forward.

Are you leasing or buying?
I would think the loss on the trade, coupled with the cost of the new vehicle and the premium for the diesel engine along with diesel costing more, that it would take a good 10-20 years to recoup the difference. Simply, diesel cost 10-20% more and that is about the increase in MPG you can expect so this alone is a wash. However, I would consider diesel if range or torque for towing is a requirement.

Thanks. My current X5 is paid for and has only 14K miles, I could trade but still by the time I paid the difference and with the higher cost of diesel it does not make financial sense. Guess I was just interested in trying the diesel, but don't really need the extra oomph. Probably keep what I have for now and down the road go diesel. Heck I got over 23 mpg on a trip from SC to Key West last summer ave about 76mph with A/C on.

I test drive a 35d and 30si back to back... and found the d to be noisy... in engine..
Torque is nice... to get the car going... but mainly a Family car for me.. and noise is more concern then power. If i want power.. I just drive my E92 335i. 30si is slow.. and smooth.. i couldn't get it to kick down...to accelerate.. but.. than again.. when I am driving x5.. its with my family....

I made the decision to go diesel (and am picking up my new X5d today!) based on other considerations as well. Don't forget there's currently a $1400 tax credit on the X5d. Even if price is a wash, I'm reducing my use of foreign oil. Furthermore, BMW says it's okay to burn B5 diesel (5% biodiesel) in the vehicle. I'll do that for several years, then try B20. I remember reading that if a third of Americans owned Diesel cars, we would no longer need to import oil from Saudi Arabia.
I'm an early adopter. I think this one direction we need to go in to solve our energy problems. I'm willing to ante up the premium to go first. |

The diesel is not noisy. I drove all three engines within 20 minutes and found the diesel to be the nicest. I like the baby growl of the 35d - it sounds very euro (us americans like that) but not as loud as the mercedes wagons of 1980 - and it's got enough torque to pull a house off it's foundation.
My only issue (and I'm pulling the trigger this week) is that every diesel pump at filling stations that i frequent are filthy and there is diesel fuel all over the ground - and the pump handle is coated with diesel film.... |

We choice to not go with diesel. First, this is my wife's car and there are not enough stations with diesel convenient to us. Second, on principle I object to the price of diesel in the US. In Europe it is a less expensive fuel option.

Is it just as easy to work on diesels as it is to work on gasoline engines? I work on all my family's cars and they are all gas powered (3 E46s-1 is M3, 2 E90s) and don't have any experience with diesel engines. I'm not even sure the major difference in specific components other than diesels have glow plugs and gas engines have spark plugs. Can anyone with a tech background help? Thanks in advance!
