328i('07) vs. 325i ('06)
My '06 325i is getting some service, and my loaner is an '07 328i. Wow -- big difference in acceleration. I didn't expect that much difference. My 325i has good power and acceleration, but the 328 really throws me back against the seat. I didn't think the power and torque difference was very big, but it sure is noticeable.

People beat the hell out of the loaners. As a result, their "learning" steptronic ATs are usually more aggressive than they otherwise might be. Maybe that's what you're feeling? That said, the 328i is indeed more powerful than the 325i.

Thought I saw a post in the NA subforum a while back where someone dyno'd a 328 manual and it put down like 206whp and on the same dyno same day someone else did a 325 auto and it put down like 186whp. so ~20whp difference? sort of makes sense you feel a bit of a power difference
That said, maybe you are just hammering the crap out of the loaner more than your regular car |

Isn' the 328i actually a 3.0L engine, vs the 325i having a 2.5L only? The big displacement difference is probably what most people feel. WHP is not something that is as noticeable since we only really use the WHP advantage a split second when high RPMs are hit...but the torque, you feel all the time in city driving.

^^ In the US, they are both 3.0L. Elsewhere, the 325i is 2.5L.

You should try a 335 loaner. You'll be in for a treat. Ask for a manual tranny if possible.

Anyway, I think there is something to the theory above that I was probably pounding the loaner harder than I would have my own. I got my car back today, and it is maybe a little less throttle-responsive, but not terribly much. Also, I wonder if the comprehensive software update the dealer did (posted in my iDrive thread) also updated the ECU software?? Last edited by abcommercial; 01-01-2009 at 01:36 AM.. |

I've a 325i and got the 328i loaner yesterday. it sure has more power and pulls much better than mine(more than 15hp on paper). is it possible that BMW silently rebadged the 330i to be 328i to make 330i customers happy?

yeah, I have always wondered how accurate the numbers were. I also found a big difference between the 328 and the 325, while the 328 and 330 seemed pretty similar to me.
Another difference is that the 328 and 330 pull longer and harder both making peak power higher in the RPM range than the 325.

Its only .2 difference in the manual between the 330 and 328 (0-60 6.1 vs 6.3 bmw times) but after that the 330 begins to pull nicely (the higher hp shows up nicely as you keep moving. There is much great difference in the auto versions though. As for the 325 as someone else stated it has always been a 3.0l just lacked the 3 stage intake of the 330 and some programming. The 328 is still a 3.0l also doesn't have the 3 stage intake but it was reworked to up the HP.

You will notice a much bigger gap past say 70 or if you are on the highway at 60 and open it up. 328i manual 0-100 mph - 16.4 seconds 1/4 Mile - 14.8 @ 95 mph 30-50 mph top gear - 10.5 seconds 50-70 mph top gear - 10.2 seconds 330i manual 0-100 mph - 15.3 seconds 1/4 mile - 14.3 @ 98 mph 50-70 mph top gear - 8.6 seconds I cant find the 30-50 time but its fairly similar, making the 330 markedly faster on the highway almost a 2 second difference.

It's more likely they de-crippled the 325i engine to give it more HP and TQ, but left it just shy of the 330i, then badged it up. Remember, the 330i also had other parts like bigger brakes, stronger tranny, longer standard features list, and so on that didn't make it to the 328i.

Interesting. I had my car in for service yesterday and was given a 328i sedan loaner -- I was amazed as to how much slower and unresponsive the automatic sedan is vs. my manual transmission wagon.
Or maybe my car was built on a Wednesday and the loaner was built on a Monday during Oktoberfest?
