1 year/10,000 miles oil change required?

I think I read a post about this somewhere but couldn't find the definitive answer.
So I took delivery of my car Nov. 18, '21
I get that it's been exactly 1 year since delivery, but I've had my break-in service done in June 18, '22
It's been 5 months, 1,000 miles since the service and the car is prompting for the annual oil change.
Is this service necessary?
If not, I'm curious why BMW didn't reset the oil change interval/reminder.

I was planning on doing my own oil changes anyway... just wondering if I should consider doing one earlier than 5k miles.

The oil change monitor isn't based on how many miles you drive. This is the same on any modern car, that has a calculated oil change reminder.

If you changed it 6 months ago, and just let it sit in the garage, with no miles on it, after the oil change, you could come back later, and it could be down to 80 or 90%.

Thank you for the feedback, guys.
I'll probably wait another few months or till 5k miles before changing the oil then.

That's just wasting oil.

There's no reason to change the oil every 2k miles, but I would recommend it at least once yearly.

Here is a good excerpt sent to us by Blackstone when finalizing oil service interval recommendations for our shop a few years ago.

"As the engine operates, acidic by-products from the combustion process get past the piston rings and into the oil. The acids combine with moisture (every gallon of gasoline burnt produces up to a 1/2 gallon of moisture) which can dissolve bearing surfaces.

Modern motor oils contain additives to combat the acid buildup in the oil. As the oil becomes contaminated and turns acidic, the additives get used up. Preventing acid buildup is a very big reason for changing motor oil regularly. Short trip driving is the worst kind of driving for this problem as moisture is not boiled off during driving cycles."

I've also been told by a BMW Engineer that acidic oil/moisture plays a large part in the degradation of gaskets and contribute to oil leaks.

Why not just take it in and have the dealership do it? Wouldn't it be covered under the standard maintenance plan that came with the car?

Do you track your car and your oil analysis finds shavings in the oil?

Oil doesn’t really age per say. As it has a infinite shelf life. Needless to say no you don’t need a oil change after 1k miles

Depends on how you drive the car. If you track it regularly, I would lean towards 5K miles oil changes. If you tune it and track it, definitely 5K miles oil changes. Just tuning it, would be around 7.5k miles. If left as stock, general rule of thumb would be 7.5-10K miles.

So does this confirm the 1yr or 10k mileage service is from the date of delivery not the date of the break in service? I guess there are some low mileage M cars that may not even do a full 1,200 miles in a year… wonder how that is treated at the annual maintenance… would they do the rear diff fluid if at say only 600 miles.

Someone I know (forgive me, I forgot the source) told me that oil does in fact age just sitting on the shelf, so you probably shouldn't use that 20 year old can that you inherited.

However, just sitting in the engine, oil does get contaminated by condensation, especially if those 1K miles were a lot of short trips that never really got the oil hot enough to boil off the water.

So I generally follow the guidelines of XX miles or 1 year, whichever comes first.

In my experience, the oil change interval is from when the car was built, not when it was delivered. If you only drive your new M car 600 miles in the first year, then there is something wrong with your priorities or perhaps you're just a collector? Either way, I think the dealer will do the "break-in" for you at that end of year, including the diff.

In Europe we have approx 18k-20k miles between oil services and no annual tick. I do however, plan to do a change at 10k, at my cost, and not have them reset the interval so I still get the scheduled change under the service plan
