335I vs 328I

I just put in an order for a 335i Monaco Blue, Black Dakota Leather, with Premium, Sport, Nav and a whole lot more (took advantage of cheap financing).

Now my wife is starting to balk at the price tag and wanting to change.

1. Can I change to a 328I considering order was only placed last Saturday.

2. Any thoughts on whether I would hate myself if I changed?

Stick with the 335... you wont regret on those nice Cali days with the windows open so you can hear that exhaust.

The power may not be necessary for all but you will enjoy on those days when you just feel like opening it up. Trust me the power difference is phenominal!!!

As a draw back... Sure the N54 has had a few fuel pumps issues but those have been dwindling on the forums here over time so i would not be worried about this too much.

Stay solid on that 335i badge... your wife wont regret it once you start the engine!!!

Your wife was okay with it at first and now is changing her mind? Or did you not check with her first before putting in the order? If that's the case, you're in a for a world of hurt.

If you change the order to 328 now and then later you test drive a 335 you will surely break up with your wife at that point.

So you better change the color to jet black, alpine white or crimson red (and save money) and give up some options (and save some more money) but still get that 335i...you will save your marriage !

get rid of some of those options and save money. A 335i with less options is still much much better than a loaded 328i.

Not sure about the 2009 model but in the 2008 model, you get more than 70hp for $6000.

Well, you seam like a family guy so I'd suggest the 328i. It'll satisfy almost any driver in terms of handling and acceleration, except for those like me who would rather drive a rocket and hit 155 going to work.
Good luck by the way.

(Personally, Id get the 335 without all the packages for the same price as a loaded 328)

Get the 335i. Every chance I get to open up my 335i, it puts a big smile on my face! it's a monster ! I love it ! awesome exhaust note! Don't pay too much attention to my username. I had originally thought about buying a 135i before I switched over to 335i.

Exclamation Same position one year ago!

I was in your same position a year ago. My wife wasn't the problem, it was the things I was reading on this forum and BimmerFest.

The 328i has less power, but enough to get you anywhere fast. Most people here downplay it, but just test drive the car. I've driven both. The 328i is sporty and quick.

I had an E90 335i on order, but cancelled the order and went with an E92 328i. The reason I cancelled on the 335i was because I was buying the car (hoping it will last myself or my parents at least 7 years). If you're leasing the car, then you will be under warrenty for the duration of the lease which would mean most of what I'm going to say next will just mean headaches instead of headaches AND cash. The 335i has a serious issue with the HPFP, and with used 335i's exiting their warrenties within a year (or already out of warranty if they've surpassed 50,000 miles), you should take this into consideration since replacing the fuel pump on your own dime can cost around $2,000+ a pop.

The following threads are the kind of threads I read before making a purchasing decision. A lot of people here own 335i's and will gloss over threads like the following, but I think as a person who is making a $40,000-$50,000 purchase, you should be informed of ALL the information regarding the car you're going to buy.

p.s - Also keep in mind that this only applies to 07, and 08 335i's, not the 09s. I haven't done much research on the 09 model to see if the reliability has increased this year.

If you get a BMW for the family sedan to cruise around from super market to super market at 20mph then why bother, hondas and toyotas are much cheeper.....having a BMW is about driving!!! I can attest to that everyday!! The car to drive is the 335, you will regret not having the power...if you like to really drive!

I got the 328i -- even after driving the 335i, and I LOVE IT. If you go with the 328, just make sure you get ZSP and 6MT. Yes, I could have afforded the 335i; I'm just not a turbo guy.

For all you knot-heads who think that "you will regret not having the power", keep in mind that BMW has a long, long heritage tied to normally-aspirated straight-6 engines. Getting a 328 is a matter of preference, not compromise as the 335 crowd constantly suggests.
