Steering wheel
I was wondering if theres any way I can make my steering wheel feel a little lighter. I think this applies to all the new 3-series models.
The wheel is extremely heavy in comparison to other cars. I feel like Im getting trucker forearms just from driving my car lol Anyway, is there an easy way to make it smoother and lighter? -thanks |

I used to road race with Camaro's and Trans Am's with LS1's and one of the mods to improve the steering fluid overheating was to put a TurnOne steering pump along with a inline steering cooler (uses engine coolant to warm up steering fluid in cold temps and cool it down under hot temps) and the pulley was seperate from the kit meaning you can change the idle pressure output via the pulley diameter. A smaller pulley would give you more PSI.

I've stopped going to the gym 5 years ago. But on all of my BMW's I've never seen a better (electrical assist) steering. Light for parking, nicely direct at speed - what's your problem?

I was hoping theres some sort of botton in the car that will lighten it up a bit. Ive heard the new M's have some sort of programs that do it. No big deal though |

I used to think the steering was a bit tight (not so much that I wanted to change it though), I did get used to it over time. I'm guessing the same will happen for you, just give it some time.
Sorry more people couldn't be helpful...

The steering in my wife's 328 coupe is definitely lighter than the steering effort required in my 335 sedan. So I don't think this is the case for all 3-series. I think it's a 335 thing. I like driving both, so I don't think tight steering necessarily equals better driving experience.

If you don't, that might explain it. I don't have it and also found the steering to be a bit on the heavy side, especially compared to my previous e46. The run-flat tires also play a role. I ditched the Bridgestone RE050's on favor on non-runflats to wrap around my 162's and the steering lightened up quite a bit. |

In the UK, all 3 Series models except the 335i get electric power steering. Is that the case in the US? If not then the hydraulic setup the 335 gets is a lot stiffer to turn, but you get more steering feel in return.

Try changing the angle of the wheel in relation to your driving position... the higher it is the easier it might be. if its fully parallel to your body if viewed from side, it might bit harder I guess.
I agree to small degree that the wheel feels a bit too hard on parking lots and i definately would like to have the ability to turn it quicker on tight spots without having to apply ANY kind of noticable force but i guess if this is the part of the package... I drove car with active steering after I bought mine and I have to say it made a lot of sense (for someone who does not go to track with the car).

Tires and tire pressure can make a noticeable difference. Wide tires make the steering tighter and vice versa. Also, make sure your tires are properly inflated. If they are low the steering will be heavier. Since you are in NY your tires may be a little low due to the cold. You may also want to try adding a few PSI more than the recommended setting - that'll help too but your ride will be a bit stiffer.

The steering is very heavy at low speeds. I've had maybe half a dozen people drive my car (including one who drives an 06 330) and the first thing every one of them says is something like "holy crap the steering is heavy". It ldoes lighten up at speed and I think its also lighter when in reverse parallel parking altho I'll take more notice of that today.
I've read that manufacturers like to add in steering effort to add a sporty feel. It works on me I guess cos I like it. Beats the hell out of the totally isolated feel of the IS350 or the CTS. They're so light it feels like you have no connection with the road. In the case of the IS you can combine that with no noise and no pedal feedback and bore yourself to sleep at the wheel. You'll get used to it. |
