Oil consumption question
I own a 2022 manual G82 M4. I changed my oil yesterday and only 6 quarts of oil came out of the crank case. BMW recommends 7 quarts which I added. I don't track the car nor do I drive it like a nut. So I want to know, did my turbo engine really burn through 1 qt of oil in just 5000 miles? Or did the dealership which previously changed the oil cheat me and only add 6 qts instead of 7?
Does the G82 engine burn that much oil when reasonably driven? And if so, all that burnt oil going thru the exhaust system wont that ruin the catalytic converters? I've never been a car guy nor a wrencher. This ownership experience is very new for me and I greatly appreciate any information. Thanks. |

What was the oil level before you drained it? Was it low? If you didn't check then you can't really make a comparison until you do it again next time.

When I drained it only 6 qts came out. And yes you're right. Next 5K miles I'm gonna do it myself and see if back to back oil changes reveal only 6 qts come out after pouring in 7 qts. If not, then the dealership remains highly suspect.

You can check the oil level in the car, see what its reading now and check again when you do the next oil change.

Even if you drain the oil until it doesn't dribble at all there's still some oil left still coating the internals, turbos, and/or some left in the oil cooler. You could start observing the digital dipstick every 500-1000 miles from now on to see if there is a decrease.
To me it seems fine but I'm not there and it's not my car. Your car is still under warranty so you could always just bring it into the dealership for free and raise your concern. |

I have no Oil consumption. I measured mine at 7,500mi when the dealer changed it and it was full. I measured it again at 12,900 with the same outcome

Dear Community,
what is the recommended oil change interval in the US? In Germany it is 15000-20000 miles. The car somehow measures oil quality and it’s only needed when it thinks it’s needed. I think it’s called condition based service. I understand an x5 would function this way but have my thoughts about doing the same with an m3, which gets a lot more beating. |

You guys have better fuel in europe so that's why the interval is longer. I suggest an oil analysis and see how well the oil is holding up.

If you give a shit about your engine, at MAX 10k with really good oil like Motul, but ideally 5k if you drive it hard and want it to last a long time, as in over 200k miles. If you bought an M and drive it like a non-M car, then do whatever. Lol
