Wireless V3 firmware/map updates
Does anyone know if this could work? Shiv?
http://www.iogear.com/product/GBS301/ Looks pretty straight forward to me. You plug this into your V3 and with your bluetooth enabled laptop, you connect to it and make all your updates. The question is whether or not the V3 software loaded on the laptop will recognize this and play nice. If not, it would be a nice feature to add in the software or build into the V3 board itself in the future.

I am actually working on finding the best solution for wireless comms to the procede, A little side project of mine
I have about 500 bucks worth of bluetooth serial adapters like that one, and none of them worked good enough for me to consider recommending them to customers... it works, although its a bit "flakey"... doesn't always connect, disconnects randomly, and is kinda laggy. There are some better ones out there, industrial grade, that are in the 200-300 dollar price range, but even those have some of the same issues... I still think there is a need for something like this... so I am making a custom hardware kit that works without the need for bluetooth or any configuring... I actually have a working prototype, it doesn't require any extra power wires either |

Please let me know if you need anyone to help test! I'm in IT so wireless tech. is well within my realm. I had a hunch it wouldn't be as easy...that's why I posted this. There is indeed a need for something like this. A "serial to Wi-Fi" option could work as well....

I think a serial to wifi (non bluetooth) device exists already but most are for POS systems and costly. I'm in IT as well and this type of stuff intrigues me. Full WiFi makes the PROcede a bit more attractive. I look forward to your homebrew solution Rick! Map adjustments from inside the house FTW!

I could see a wireless solution working for map/firmware changes. Datalogging may be a little more difficult. The cable through the glovebox may be the ideal solution.

Where are you going to take the 5V power from? The parani has a 12v input. (directly usable) God luck.

Temperature-wise, the iogear should be fine. And 12v to 5v regulator circuits are trivial (cigarette-lighter adapters use them or radio shack).
The Parani solution works because it uses the physical serial port, not a flaky virtual serial port provided by the bluetooth stack's SPP. As yet, no one has gotten the iogear GBS301 to work with the PDE Reader. This may be due to an interoperability problem between the particular bluetooth stack's virtual serial port implementation and the Reader's com-port software, or due to GBS301 hardware limitations. Keeping in mind some downsides of the the Parani solution include price (need two), high latency for data logging, and bulkiness, there is good reason to try other options. Something like the "Firefly" and "FirePlug" or "BluePlug" pair may work. The price is comparable to one Parani device. My next experiment would be to try something like this (in order): 1) IOGear GBS301 to "FirePlug" ($70) As the FirePlug presents itself as serial port, it should work with the Reader as well as the USB to serial adapters. garyhgaryh - I'll go in half on a FirePlug, if you can try it. If this did not work, it suggests the GBS301 is the likely culprit. So, I'd ditch the GBS301 and get a "Firefly" ($75). The Firefly is a better device than the GBS301, providing a more robust connection and longer range. 2) Firefly to FirePlug or Firefly to a generic bluetooth USB or laptop internal bluetooth or Firefly to BluePlug may work too 3) Firefly to Firefly (a la Parani solution) |

I've tried two bluetooth adapters using different BT stacks and was unsuccessful in getting it to work with the GBS301. I ended up returning it. I got it at a good price, but wasn't compelled to keep it. If I still have the GBS301 I would go half, but since I returned it I won't be able to try it. Gary |
