reverse + brakes = thump sound
So I just got my car back from service. There was a squeeking noise coming from the back right wheel. They said it was the braek sensor - fixed it under warranty.
But.. Now, when I go in reverse then apply the brakes..i hear a "thump" sound. Then when I go forward and apply the brakes I get another thump...if I apply the brakes twice I dont get the thump another time. I only get the thump the first time I apply the breaks going in a certain direction. like the brakes are loose or something?? Anyone experience this? Thanks in advance... skimo update: got car back from dealership. They said the sound was normal and due to the Break Assist Feature. Surprisingly, when I got the car back, the sound had gone away! They did do a transmission job where a bunch of components were changed (6mt). So maybe that was the transmission! Just speculating. Last edited by skimo; 02-15-2009 at 03:31 PM.. Reason: update |

Mine does it too, done it for months.
On an incline or on level ground for you? We all get it on an incline as the pin comes out, but mine also does iton the flat.

Are you using the emergency brake. Had that happen with a car about 15 years ago. For that car the emergency brake was looking up and the clunk was the releasing of the brake. The problem was misdiagnosed ended up cost $2,000 to fix.

Sounds like the transmission just switched gears... normal?

It's normal. It's a characteristic of floating calipers. Basically what's happening is when you are moving forward and apply the brake, the pad shifts to one side of the caliper. When you go in reverse and apply the brake, the pad shifts to the other side of the caliper. That's why you only hear the clunk once, after you change direction.

Skimo - please let us know what your dealer says...
My '07 328i sporatically clanks LOUDLY going into reverse with my foot very firmly on the brakes. It seems to happen most often when I've left it parked on a slight nose-up incline. There's a thread buried somewhere in the mechanical forum (I've searched but can't find it) that's similar, and suggests the problem is slop in a univeral joint in the driveshaft. They even posted a schematic that detailed where the dealer was supposed to apply threadlocker or sealant to fix the problem. This is my third new BMW coupe, and the only car I've had the problem with. I'm in Germany, and have taken mine to Kohl BMW in Heinsberg twice. They haven't been able to reproduce the problem either time, but assure me what I'm describing does not sound normal. |

Are you sure it is the brakes.
Please try this when stationary. Rev the engine past 1400 and then let it idle back. Does it make the noise. I suspect it might as I have something similar and I too thought it was something from the rear but aftre investigation it is the throttle, and under the hood. I have had it investigated and the dealer says its normal, which I dont believe. |

it could be your bushings. they could possibly be cracked. i had the same problem on my e46. found out the bushings were done and had to be replaced. ever since, the "thump" sound is gone.

Hate to say it, I noticed this sound too. It was not there before. It is not a squeal or groan, and my feeling was it wasn't from the pads/rotors, but somehow from the hardware....
