'07 335i Coupe to '06 330i Sedan
Due to our growing family, I've made the switch from coupe to sedan and decided to take advantage of the 0.9% + 2 payments on the last day of December.
I was lucky to get the 335i coupe back on November of 2006 and it was the first one that hit my local dealer that wasn't pre-ordered. I must say that right now, even with all the problems I experenced ( fuel pump, waste gate, transmission ), I really miss the pure enjoyment of all that power!! With having 43k miles and not wanting to have repair bills, it just seemed like good business. Plus, the Alpine White with the Terra Brown/Black interior combo, sport/premium, navigation, 33k miles and CPO, the deal just felt right. As I am becoming more familiar with the sedan, I am curious about it's horsepower. I've seen that in '06, it was increased to 255 as compared to the 225 or so in the '05. However, this vehicle doesn't seem to accelerate nearly as quickly as my wife's '06 530i! Both cars have spot / premium, but shouldn't the 3 "get up and go" faster than the larger and heavier 5-series? Do all the sedans have this engine or is it possible that I have one with the lower horsepower? Lastly, I'd be curious to know if anyone who reads this post has made the switch and said goodbuy to the twin-turbos and whether or not you have regrets? |

The 06 330i and 530i have the same engine (N52) and HP/TQ rating (255/220). It should in theory be a little quicker, maybe the previous owner rode it a little too hard. |

I am sure he is talking about the 530i because it got the N52. The old 330i engine at 225HP was a lot peppier and felt faster off the line. You are not going to like going from a 335i to a 330i though..

and to the OP, no 530i is not that much heavier, pull the specs from Edumonds.com you'll see that the weight difference between a 330i and 530i is very negligible, less than 1 Kate Moss' worth.

I do miss the acceleration and torque for sure. However it was a business decision + the 4-doors was needed. I'm a 3-series guy and kind of had my fill on the issues with the 335i!!

Car might need to learn your driving habbits. Maybe the previous owner babied it too much.

if you have a 530i, then why did you need another sedan for the family?

The 5 series uses a lot more aluminum in its construction to keep the weight down even though its a larger car (also why its more expensive). E90 330i 0-60 6.1 manual Curb Weight 3417 E60 530 0-60 6.4 manual Curb Weight 3472 The E90 will be faster in the 1/4 and also beyond because of the smaller size and better areodynamics, but if you are looking for it to be much faster then the E60 its just not going to be.

The REAL new 330i (available in Europe) has 272hp (as opposed to the old 258) and has direct injection. Its a whole different engine. Fuel consumption is about 10% better also.
I really don't get why the US always gets the old engines, and sometimes is like banned from goodies like M Sport pack for years...I would fire the BMWNA directors if I could |

For those who can't do the conversion from metric HP to SAE HP, the DI would add 13 HP in the US (255 HP for the old engine, 268 HP for the new DI version), while also being slightly more fuel efficient.

Then they came out with the direct injection version which is where the bump in HP came from. We didnt get that here because at the time we did not have low sulfur fuel. That is what helps with the increased MPG as well.

I made the switch from E90 335i to E92 330i, however the 330i is the european 272hp model. Could'nt be happier to finally get rid of that horrible turbolag.
I compared straightline performance with a colleagues 335iA (E91) It made me realize just how good the 330i is. He pulled two carlength ahed of me from 0 to 180kph, but from there on I started gaining on him and by the time we got to 255kph I was right on his tale (one carlength). Note that we tested this at a closed track, wich is the test track of one of the automakers in Sweden. Both cars stock btw. |
