Detailer's Tip

You can still get original Windex with ammonia on Amazon. If you don't think ammonia makes a difference, try it! Your windows will be cleaner than ever.

I would not use that on window tint.

The best way to clean windows is using clay bar on surfaces with no film. For tint film surfaces, I use SprayWay Glass Cleaner.

My "windex" is:
- 60% water
- 20% alcohol (70% or 91% are fine)
- 20% vinegar
- 8 or 10 drops of dawn dishwashing liquid.
Absolutely no streaking.

Everyone seems to have their secrets; my point is that Windex without ammonia is a useless product. But you can still get the original and it works better than any other window cleaning product on the market. I'm old so I'm glad to have discovered I can still get what works.

As a detailer, are you saying ammonia based cleaners are safe for use right next to interior plastics and headliner / pillar fabric? It was always my understanding that ammonia could discolor these and damage rubber window seals (hence
essentially all auto glass cleaners being ammonia free, no?).

Well, I've been cleaning car windows with original Windex for 40 some years, so I can safely say this is not a concern.

I do 50/50
Rubbing alcohol and distilled water. Never thought about adding vinegar and soap. It works great

Vinegar helps remove mineral deposits and the dawn is a great cleaner.

I first saw the recipe posted by MZ back in the late 70s or early 80s. It would show up in the newspaper every once in a while. The fact that it both worked and left no streaks made it a revelation at the time.

I'm too lazy to mix my own anymore and now use Sonax's glass cleaner.

I think the minerals are deposited by rain and/or whatever comes up off the street from the cars in front of you..

Better than toxic ammonia, that’s the last shit I would use.

Well, to each their own. I'm happy to have original Windex. And will continue to happily use it as long as I can get it. Efficient and effective.

White vinegar does work miracles in just about any mineral deposits on solid surfaces.

I use it with ZERO streaks, you have to apply an 2-step method.
- apply on window with an microfiber
- then dry off with a "WAFFLE WEAVE" towel, guaranteed ZERO streaks and it looks super clear af.

Or you can use original Windex and a couple pieces of paper towel and be done in one step.

Get better towels.

If your glass is so dirty that it takes more than one step to clean, it's probably time to wash the whole car.

That reminds me. I used warm water and newspaper for many years, and that worked just fine as a replacement for the formula posted by MarcoZandrini.

Some of this depends on what you tend to get on your windshield and how much of it is on the glass when you clean it.

The biggest cause of dirt on the inside of a windshield in modern cars is off gassing from interior plastics. I had a Ford product that was especially bad in this regard, and my Bimmer is relatively good in this regard, possible because I have the top down alot. But having the top down allows other types of dirt to build up, so it requires frequent cleaning in summer months. Seems to me a lot of people like complicated cleaning methods, I just want one that is quick and easy and allows me to get back to driving, which is why I have this car to begin with. And original Windex with a couple squares of paper towel is the quickest, most effective method I know.
