Re-cir turns off on its own

Does anyone experience this? I had been able to keep it on for a long time since day 1. Recently it changed ita behavior. It randomly turns off like MB. Did something change OTA?

normal by design. this screenshot was from my owner’s manual from 2021 while I was on 11/2020 software

in the past, environmental conditions may have allowed you the stay in recirculating mode longer than the conditions you experience currently

Why would you leave it on 100% of the time? It’s like putting a paper bag over your nose and mouth…you start breathing in the air you’re exhaling.

In a heavy traffic environment when you stuck there for hours not to smell exhaust from hundreds of cars around.

hasn’t been an issue in non-recirculating mode for me. here’s why:

If you regularly drive where there's lots of crud in the air, you may need to change the activated carbon and particulate filters more often than considered normal.

In X5 air filter is much better vs other cars, but still standing in front of a rather old diesel truck for some time, or driving through an area with swamps and the smell starts to penetrate the cabin even with auto mode - on. Noticed few times during my first 6 months of ownership traveling around the country. The car was new, not blaming the clogged filter.

Fresh air is not always fresh. Have you been to a party where you are ready to have a nice meal and someone with a trench mouth joins your goup? Lol

Wow never knew about this! I never had this issue for two years or so. Why would they want to control over this? What if I have Auto off? Can I keep it on? At least bmw does not turn off as fast as my wife’s mb.

BMW has condensation sensors. When in recirc mode, any moisture you may give off by breathing, sweating, or from the snow or rain you tracked in will accumulate in the vehicle, eventually fogging up the windows. The only way to get rid of that moisture is to turn recirculation off, run the a/c and likely heat, or raise the temperature which raises the dew point...that often won't be enough if the windows are cold enough.

If your carbon filter is in good shape, it generally isn't a big deal, at least to me.

on the easter shore, we pass the Purdue chicken plant. when in my old Audi Q7, we could always smell the rank odors and had to turn on recirc to keep the stench out, but not with the X5.

Don’t some of the new BMW models have ionizers, too? If your BMW has an ionizer, and condensation sensor…plus the use of the AUTO AUC feature that will close the fresh air vents when the AUC sensor detects polluted air above the specified level…in most cases the system will take care of auto exhaust and stinky air. But one can always close the fresh air flaps manually if the auto system doesn’t kick in.

EDIT: yep, the G05 has an “ambient air pkg” (option code S4NMA) which has an air ionizer:

the ambient air package is not an option for U.S. models, and I haven’t come across anyone who’s retrofitted one in theirs
