Same reason the steering wheel heater switch on the LCI is hidden. I'd prefer to have the switch remain in the same place but have some kind of on/off light somewhere else that the driver can see.

Yeh I have the same issue. Well it's not an issue I guess, it's just an annoyance. My therapist says that I should forget about it, maybe she's on to something.

As much of a PITA not being able to see the light behind the steering wheel, its nothing compared to the 62 buttons on our MDX console - I can see them all but can't find anything..lol

I noticed this too. What a serious design flaw.

Same with the window controls.

Yea, if they didn't ues all that space on the center console for routing the air vents to the back seat, they could have place the window controls on the center console just like the E36.

I am glad it's behind the steering wheel, because there is no need for me to see it.

It should always be off, and once I need it on, I can see the wiper wiping just fine, no need for the green light among amber. Just my 0.02

LCI = code for the facelifted model. 2009 E90 is LCI. 2010 E92 will be LCI.

Have you ever thought they might have designed it on purpose? Who the hell wants to see all of the stalks sticking out. It's a clutter. It's not that hard to memorized the functions of the stalks. You don't need to see them. Just need to access them. I like it hidden because it makes the cabin looks more clean.

It's another term for the 2009 face lift. The Cold Weather Package starting with this model year includes a heated steering wheel.

What's the point of putting the light there if you can't see it? Goes to show BMW messed up. Has nothing to do with clutter.

+1

The sightlines through your steering wheel is only so big, unless you want a bigger wheel diameter. And if you don't want just too much crap flashing, blinking, moving, dialing, counting, whatever in that small space, then you have to figure out what the important things are.

I reckon it's something like the HUD on an F-16 fighter. The Heads Up Display only shows the important stuff that you pretty much always need to know about. Everything else is out of sight, for when you have time to take a look at them.

Not so, in my opinion. The light on the stalk is a quick way to tell you whether it's on or off, versus seeing if the button has been pushed in or not (as an alternative way for BMW to have done it). Still, I don't need to see the light every 30 seconds while I'm driving; pretty much just once every 10 or 15 trips...
And all I have to do is lean forward all of 6 inches to see it. Goddamn that's hard to do, man I think BMW's trying to kill me.
