I went to the San Francisco event on Sunday. It was well run. We got to try a BMW 330i, Infiniti G35 sedan and an Audi A4 3.2. All were auto transmission with the sport packages, and the 330i had the active steering option.
There were about 30-40 people in total. They put three people per car and we each got to drive four laps in total: 1 recon lap in the E90, and then 1 fast lap in each car. The instructors then took us for a lap to show how it should have been done. One of the instructors was Indy 500 runner-up Davy Jones (I think that's him in my photo) and they had others from places such as the Euro touring car championships. Instructor lap times were around 1 minute or so, and top speed was around 70mph. It was fantastic to see what the E90 was capable of, but it probably would have been even more helpful if they did their lap first rather than last so we could at least try to emulate them There was no actual timing equipment on the track so it was hard to get an objective comparison between the cars. Most people there really liked the way the E90 handled compared to the others. It felt nimbler than the heavier A4, and more stable than the G35. Many also felt that the A4 was a great car. One of the instructors commented that the A4 sounded the best of the three at full throttle, and a few people enjoyed the ability to easily drift the A4 around one of the long sweeping right hand corners. The general consensus was that the G35 came in a distant third - it felt much more unstable than the others at the limits of adhesion although I imagine that it could be rewarding if driven well.
