Quick question concerning stock exhaust

Hey guys,

Is it normal to have only one side of the exhaust exhaust when starting the car? I'm guessing not... I noticed one morning last week when I was leaving for work that I was blowing smoke out of the passenger-side tailpipe but not the driver's side. This was early in the morning in Los Angeles, and it must've been around 40 deg F out. I've noticed it does the same thing every morning - I start the car, engine hovers around 1.1k rpm before settling to about 7k with one exhaust blowing, then the second exhaust kicks in with a rattle and it finally settles at about 5.5k. It's been doing the same thing every morning since I first noticed last week.

Any ideas? I'm going in for a service appointment tomorrow morning... I have an 08 E93 335i, Nov. 07 build with a little over 10k miles.

Thanks!

So I have nothing to worry about? Exhaust from one tailpipe (not both) from a cold start is normal? Sweet deal! Thanks!

Not at all, was just planning on mentioning it

I went on a road trip this weekend and had to make an unexpected stop at a dealership because my ftm kept going off. Long story short, I had a loose valve stem on one of the tires, a nail in each of the rear tires, and a cracked rear rim I got the tires replaced, but they didn't have any rims in stock, so I'm getting that taken care of tomorrow. That, and the SA mentioned I'd need to service my rear brakes pretty soon. Just thought I'd mention the exhaust, pending the 'post's scrutiny

unplug that wire in your trunk (behind left tail light) and you'll have both exhaust open at all times.

I'd be worried the car is idling too high

Haha, whoops. I meant 700 and 550. I'd be worried if it was idling that high, too!

i recognized too and my friend is working for BMW and he showed me how you have always both exhaust. just lay on the floor at the driver side exhaust and remove that cable which is pluged there. after that turn on your car and you'll see both exhausts working

There is a vacuum hose under the car near the end of the exhaust that holds the valve closed until warm up. I would just leave it alone. They engineered the car well, and the ECU knows the engine temp and won't allow much boost until the engine is warmed up. Having half the exhaust closed helps the car warm up faster and allows full boost sooner.

ya this car warms up so fast compared to other cars ive owned. it was -4 F this morning and my car was already blowing heat into the cabin within two minutes. My GMC Sierra with a 6.0 v8 takes like ten mins. too bad i will lose that flap when i put on my exhaust

no you have the wires that connect to the light itself but other than that it's only that wire that if i remember correctly. it has like a little metal hook or clip on it. i'm sure if you search for the unplug mod you will find a thread that has pictures just in case you don't want to fuck up haha. but it's quick and can be switched back in no time in case something comes up though i don't think it's a problem i had the car serviced and wasn't told anything about it.

There's an actuator back driver side, right by the exhaust on 335i. It allows to open both exhaust or one depending on the amount of boost and the temp of the engine. It uses one exhaust at slow speed or low boost to keep the back pressure and opens up at high idle or high boost to release all pressure. Actually this is pretty smart. I've never seen anything like this b4 til i got my brand new 335i.
