Yep, only opens about 3000RPM when it hasn't been modded I believe. I was behind a 335i on the highway the other day and it was cold so you could see the exhaust real good. That thing looked so f'ing retarded with the exhaust only coming out the passenger side. My 2 cents.

Since the flap is operated by that vac line it will only open when the car is out of vac and in boost (ie. when you press down on the throttle and get into boost). So when your engine is cold or you are just sitting at idle, or cruising on the highway it will stay closed.

The flap for the driver side exhaust will open during idle once it has come down to a idle after the intial/cold start. It will then close during normal moderate throttle. The flap will open during heavy accel. or WOT. Otherwise it will stay close.

Idle, heavy, WOT = flap is open.

Does this change if I opt to change out the exhaust (BMW Perf., AE, etc)?

Usually, even the BMW performance exhaust, the Air tube that goes to the Acuator itself, is disabled via plugging or other method (since there is no more actuator usually in any other exhausts/mufflers including the BMW performance exhaust). So no more actuator(other exhaust then stock), no need for the black air tube, so it gets disabled and tucked away.

So both pipes should be on all the time (w/BMW Perf., AE, etc.)?

LOL! I was thinking the same thing. From now on, I'll sit at my keyboard waiting to answer questions the second they're posted!

The flap has it's own actuator, it's not controlled from engine vacuum, that's why the plug exists as an option to just removing the line.
