Pipe Dynamics Resonator Delete - DIY Installed

Received and installed my resonator from Pipe Dynamics UK this past weekend and...yea digging it. This resonator delete can be self-installed, although I definitely found it'd be easier with a lift. Since I didn't have one, I ended up on jack stands making things work. Mind you, I already have fuse 203 pulled, but was looking for a bit more without braking the bank. For ~550 all in, this fit the bill nicely. I'll look to get more videos soonish, but what I've found post-install:
  • Cold-start in garage is definitely more violent...in the best of ways
  • Slightly more burble/pops and turbo-go-whoosh noise
  • Generally more pronounced, deeper exhaust sound throughout the rev ranges

Disclaimer - I am clearly not a professional, so please see this thread as guidance only. I know where I could have done a better job with my install, and if you're not comfortable with DIY mods, take your car to an exhaust shop. It's not a ton of work with the right tools and knowledge.

If you decide to order, please add "XBimmers referral" to your order comments. They wanted to track influence for posts like this and hopefully, we can get future support from them too

Link of where to buy

Tools/Requirements:
  • Exhaust Sealant (recommended. I used permatex, but there's tons of options)
  • Pipe Cutter (sawzall reccomended)
  • Tape Measurer
  • 70mm exhaust clamps (I used Volkswagen PN #5Q0253141 as they were only $26)
  • Basic hand tools/sockets
  • Some way to get the car in the air

Steps:
  • Lift the car
  • Let the exhaust cool
  • For the back two cuts, measure ~3" forward of the welds (towards front of vehicle) and mark cuts
  • For the cut before the resonator, you're looking for the center of the straight secion in the "S" bend. Mark appropriately. This was easily the harder section to define the "center" and could have greatly benefited from a lift where you can line up the new pipe with the existing pipe to define the needed cuts.
  • Rear 2 cuts need to be made first. Pick one and go to town. I started with the roller cutter pictured and eventually found that I couldn't get cuts as clean as I was hoping due to the angle I was at on my back. I eventually borrowed this hackzall tool and wondered why I didn't start with it to begin with.
  • Once the rear sections are cut, you are able to use the roller cutter on the front section. Previously with the roller cutter I was running into clearance issues and found that when the rear section was cut I was provided more clearance to fit the roller tool around the front section.
  • Boom! Original resonator is out
  • Slide exhaust clamps onto the new piping. Pay careful attention to which way the nuts are facing as it'll make it much easier to work with later. For the rear section, I chose to have the bolts for the clams face each other, meeting at the center of the vehicle. I also found that I needed to coat the tips of the rear section (twin 2.75" pipes) with exhaust sealant knowing I wouldn't be able to get to it later. Sure, the clamps were going to get coated as I slid the clamps later, but that didn't bother me.
  • Coat the ends of the pipes on the car with exhaust sealant.
  • Move new exhaust piece into place
  • Connect front of the new exhaust to the original piping. Do not tighten clamps completely as you'll need play with the rear section.
  • Connect rear two clamps to original piping with your new exhaust clamps. Partially tighten and inspect for any issues - Is the front section still completely seated? Any gaps to worry about? If you got the measurements right, you should be good. I personally focused on a perfect connection up front and ha a slight gap between pipes in the rear that I used the exhaust clamps to seal.
  • Everything look good? Tighten all bolts completely and get your car back on the ground
  • Enjoy!

You pull the fuse once the car is warmed up & in sport+, it’ll open the exhaust flap on the driver’s side permanently. There is a code stored, but it’s not a huge deal. No lights on the dash or warnings.

Interesting... and so it's louder all the time? My son did something similar to his m340, he pulled the physical plug out of the exhaust where the valve is, to keep it open.

is it a big difference? while on subject, how is the exhaust the way it is in general? I believe it has the MPE correct? I just ordered my m40i yesterday so I'm just preparing what it'll need when it arrives and it's hard to tell from videos lol

Correct, fuse pull makes it louder, resonator delete adds to that and changes the tone a bit + more turbo noises + slightly more burble from what I can tell. I didn’t take a ton of before videos, but do have back to back startups that I’ll need to cut together. That said, this accomplished exactly what I was hoping for without going crazy on a full exhaust system or changing anything that’ll throw codes (IE: downpipe).

interesting... I'd like to hear it when you have a chance.. when my m40 arrives I'll have to assess if the exhaust as is, is good enough lol

Looks like a great option. I had been looking for something like that on another car a while back. It's interesting to see that in some cases products like this are more prevalent in Europe.

22 and 24 are the same so it will fit. The other thing it will do is void your warranty.

I did exactly the same mod with the resonator delete from Pipe dynamics uk. Mine is a 2023 European model with gpf and the differenc is impressive.

It is so much more raw. Just brilliant.

I also have a HJS 300 cell Downpipe.

Now in winter, I don´t have pulled the fuse, because i fear that flap seizes. I have it always open in sports mode.

I’m assuming you’re talking about the warranty being voided? Pretty sure the Magnuson-Moss law has been spoken about numerous times on so many different forums, that you’d think it’s common knowledge by now lol.😝

Absolutely not false. Take it in for engine/drivability issues with a modified exhaust and see how long it takes them to tell you it's your fault.

If you have issues effecting engine/drivability that could be caused by your exhaust mods the Magnuson-Moss law won't help you.

Guys like you always bring that law up like its a get out off jail free card for anything you do to your car. Even if it covers your issue you will need an attorney and lots of time to file a lawsuit against BMW when they tell you they won't cover it.

Im not talking about exhaust mods effecting non related warranty claims. What I am saying is if you do mod your exhaust and you have any issues that BMW can claim were caused by your mod they can and will refuse related warranty work.

They’d have a hell of a time trying to prove that a resonator delete could damage an engine lol

The thing is they don't have to prove anything. They just have to claim it's causing problems. You on the the hand have to prove that your mod is not causing an issue. It's not a fair fight that you will most likely lose.

And cost you a shit ton of cash, I for one don’t have the financial resources to take on a powerhouse like BMW, which is why I don’t mechanically modify my cars anymore! Whilst under warranty anyway!
