Modded 335i Purchase - NEED ADVICE! Flashed ECU?
Hey everyone,
New to this forum and on Monday could very well be transitioning from the world of Audi to the wonderful world of BMW's-- specificaly a 2007 beautiful 335i Sedan w/ sport/premium/nav/logic 7 and all the other good juice! Here's the issue--- the dealer found out there "once" was a chip in the car apparently, so it lost its CPO but after careful negotiations they gave me a free 2-year extended warranty and cut the price down for me, so I am flying down to Orange County Monday to look at it and probably buy it. SO.... The technician said he looked at everything and everything is completely stock in it right now, but before they told me they drove it and it felt like it had an extra 100hp in it! They couldn't find any modded parts in it though... What on earth could be causing there to be an extra 60-100hp if they cant find a chip or anything in it? Is it possible that the ECU was tampered with without a chip being visible? If so, could I get the ECU to it's normal state again? Please let me know any advice you have on this issue-- the sooner the better since i'm flying down Monday. Thank you all for your inputs! |

^ +1. Be wary here....If they want to sell it why can't they keep the CPO for you if nothing is "visible"? And who is saying "it feels like it has an extra 100hp"?

Someone isn't telling you the straight story - or they are really mistaken. At a minimum, they reflashed the ECU to factory if they thought it had been flashed (Dinan). And if it had been flashed, they can determine that or at a minimum contact Dinan with the VIN to verify.
I'd find out how they acquired the car - trade or dealer trade or auction. If it was a trade at their store, tell them to call the prior owner and find out what he/she had done if they really don't know. Also have them pull all the service records and look it over yourself (any dealer can do that for you). With all that said, if the car has zero accidents and a clean maintenance history, I wouldn't worry too much since you're covered through 2013.

If it were dinan, they wouldn't have to "find" it, as that information is in the BMW computer already. But the fact that they detected some other tuning mod, like some piggyback, is weird, since they are supposed to be invisible at this point... *shrug*
Honestly, though, so far nobody has had any problems with piggyback tunes damaging their engines/turbo's... so I actually wouldn't be too worried about it... Do you plan on keeping it for >6 years?

Hey
I will probably keep it 6-8 years... I know the dealers are being a little dishonest but they did give me 4 years factory warranty and the price is right so im sure I'll be ok...
The main concern I have is that I wanted to add a JB3, but if my ECU is flashed I don't who flashed it etc. Is it easy to get it reflashed to stock? I suppose it could be damaging to throw a JB3 on if my ECU is already flashed with something else... right? One cool thing I realized is that since the dealer already knows there was a mod and gives me a warranty, if I put a JB3 on and take it off they will never know and my warranty wont be voided. What do you think? |

Haha... I meant people who take money that isn't theirs (as in the case of warranty fraud)... not people who buy 335i's... lol
