running an ethanol blend in your car? consider stepping up one viscosity level.

I’m running E30 in my jb4 “tuned” m240i, I think it’s a good idea to shorten oil change intervals and increase one viscosity level. Factory is 0w20, I’m going with the optional 5w30.

https://www.blackstone-labs.com/ why guess when you could send some in and see what's really going on with it? Also anytime you start adding power it's probably a good idea to shorten oil change intervals.

I’ll be doing that too, but it’s better to be proactive vs reactive. Since two viscosity grades are indicated (0w20 and 5w30), I’ll be going with the higher grade. Very well respected builder here: https://youtu.be/bPcVBc4-5Mk

where is the BMW optional "optional grade" of 5w-30 you speak of?
All i have ever seen BMW spec for this car is ll-12fe, ll17fe or ll-14fe.
Neither of which is a 5w-30 oil.
Now I'm not saying a 5w-30 oil is not ok, it's just that your message implies a BMW optional recommended oil of 5w-30, if I am mistaken please educate me as i see no reference to such in the 2022 or 2023 manual.
If you mean "optional" in the generic sense, well then anything can be considered an optional oil depending upon who is making that call.

Not “bmw optional”, I didn’t say that. I said factory is 0w-20 and “optional” is 5w-30 (ll-04 there are no zero weight ll-04’s). Bmw recommendation is for zero weight “FE” aka primarily for fuel efficiency emissions (CAFE) related reasons. LL-04 is the better oil spec from a protection perspective, unless you live in severely frigid weather. LL-04 is the spec for the engine lifetime. Go to Redline, BimmerWorld, Turner, FCP you’ll see 5w-30 LL-04 is optional for the B58TU (that’s what I’m talking about). Whether you agree with them is up to you, but with potential dilution issues for those who use ethanol blends like myself and do short trips, I’m sticking with the experts recommendation not CAFE standards. Losing 1 mpg is meaningless to me.

Ok, thanks that helps.
It's just that the term "two viscosity grades are indicated" kinda threw me.
There's a lotta oils that could be considered "optional" for this car.
Me i do run a 5W-30 oil that has characteristics/specs of my choosing (HTHS. TBN, LSPI threshold etc) which is NOT a BMW spec oil (there's a huge variance in 5w30 oils).
