Software version 07/2023

The software just dropped. Waiting for the list of changes before I take the plunge and load it. This is not available OTA yet by the way. I'll post the changes when they are available.

Yep it seems it's version S18A-23-07-523. I'm eager to test it on the X5 and XM. I've got driver assistance faults at the moment on the XM and the X5 did the christmas tree last week with software faults also.

Couple of small changes for most of us. The majority of changes are LCI focused as expected.

So comfort exit isn’t coming to G05/06? That’s BS. What could be the reason for leaving this out?

I can't even begin to speculate why they choose to do what they do. BMW has never been great with adding features to "legacy" vehicles unless they can find a way to monetize it with a subscription. Sometimes it's due to hardware differences ... ie they choose to implement it in a newer version of the ecu(s) and not older systems. Without insider knowledge, we have no definitive way of knowing whether it's truly a hardware limitation or business decision.

But G05/06 LCI would be considered newer right? This is so frustrating.
I also see that now you can subscribe to adaptive suspension?! So basically the car comes with the hardware but you gotta pay to activate it. And forget coding it in because they killed that by requiring server side signing of all updates. Fudge this schist.

What’s up with change #27? Does this mean my LCI is equipped with the adaptive suspension but it’s deactivated and in the softest setting?

Yes, LCI would be newer. I think you sort of answered your own question on the why. The LCI vehicles have implemented secure coding the requires backend validation so basically eliminating custom coding and tweaks we've become accustomed to. They aren't enabling secure coding in the majority of cases for older vehicles, just the newer hardware modules on LCI vehicles. So the answer might be as simple as "don't implement a feature in software where you can't control it and charge for it".

On the subscription stuff, those are usually a combination of coding and feature enable codes (FSC). Certain things need both coding and a license basically. So that would explain why they would offer things on older vehicles that aren't secure coding. Even if you could code it, it won't actually work without the FSC as well which you have to buy.

Yeah I understand all of that. It’s just really frustrating to see G05/06 LCI not listed amongst a long list of compatible vehicles for comfort exit. I think those and G01/02 might be the only unsupported vehicles in the entire lineup.

Btw, does 07/23 bring iD8 too? I see quick select listed somewhere in the release notes too. Also, how do updates usually roll out? I keep checking but nothing is available for my G06 LCI at the moment.

No. The iDrive versions are specific to the hardware. The LCI vehicles have newer ecu(s) in certain cases like the headunit, cluster and certain driver assist functions. Those newer ecu's will have already had ID8 or 8.5.

BTW ... don't feel too left out. I'm dealing with similar issues with my other vehicles too like pre-LCI G20 and G30. You need a Cracker Jack box secret decoder ring to figure out what works on 1 vehicle but not the other. I have (3) 2020 vehicles (F95, G20 and G30). They all have Comfort Access 322, yet proximity only works on the 3 series G20 and X5M F95. The 5 series G30 doesn't support it. I've dealt with similar issues with why iPhone Digital Key works on 2021 models but not 2020 when it appears to be all the same hardware. I share your frustration.

I assume you mean iD8.5 since you already have iD8, the OTAs for that are scheduled to start in September.

Unsurprisingly BMW is limiting features (i.e. updated driving assist view) to a particular build date again, even though no new hardware is required.
