AutoBild's photo is the same used for the header on this site, so nothing new in terms of images. While I would welcome an "M1" based on the 1-series, I can see the article being nothing more than wild speculation at this point.

The solution to BMW's naming conundrum is to call the coupe/convertible the 2-series and name the M version the M2. That way, the non-M coupe can claim historical linkage to the 2002 and the M version won't be confused with the venerable late-70s supercar.

I think its a bit too late for them to call it the 2. And if you think about it? If they were to ever bring back the original "M1" It would be just kind've out of place. Because the M's have this order to them. The more higher up, the more bad ass. i mean think about it: M1-343HP M3- 420HP M5- 500HP M6 500HP.

Call it whatever you like... just sell me one! I guess I'd favor the M2 moniker, but you can make good arguments for either name. For that matter, I'll probably be driving a 135i (aka 135ti) by then anyway.

Smaller, lighter, smaller, lighter, smaller, lighter...

It's never too early to start visualizing the car in your garage and in the color you want

black and i already know the license plate :thumbup:

but on the subject is there anything out there pertaining to what the powerplant in the M1 will likely be? I really cant see them putting the M3 V8 in there and the 335's TT 6 seems like just what the performance model 1er would be... maybe just a tuned version (pistons, CR, displacement, diff turbos)?

There is mass speculation that its gonna be a modern version of the E46 M3 engine pumping out around 350hp. i'll take it! :biggrin: Ofcourse the car will get the typical M treatment.

i got this off of this board sometime a while ago, makes sense and clears up some of the speculation here, sorry don't remember the actual source

================================================== ==========
The BMW M1 will follow these ideals by also offering cutting edge developments such as the Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic roof , lightweight body panels and aerodynamic M styling treatment. With styling taking a cue with the new BMW M3 Coupe but with the front appearance becoming more angular with a trapese shape for the central intake.

Initially available as only a Coupe and a Convertible BMW are seriously considering throwing the 3dr hatch into the mix - Although if greenlighted this would be for European/Asian markets only.

Until such a car as the M1 arrives in the meantime BMW will offer a Ltd edition 135i M-Sport - Confined to only the Coupe and 3dr Hatch only this will be the gap until the M1 comes along. To emphasize the sporting credentials of the Coupe the base petrol model will be the 120 Si using the four cylinder petrol engine that was in the limited edition BMW 320Si WTCC Car.

I am wondering what engine will M1 use.. E46 3.2 Inline 6 is very expensive engine and outdated by today's standards.. Will they try to modernize that engine? I cant see BMW throwing E92 M3s v8 in there... Maybe they can factory tune 3.0TT to 350/350 and be done with it..
