1-Series Coupe Chassis Origin?

Hi All,

I have been monitoring this board for a while and now that the 135i info is out, I am seriously considering it as a replacement for my 325Ci.

Here is a question for which I seem to have gotten conflicting info: Is the 1-Series Coupe chassis based on the E46, E92 or is it its own developed-from-scratch chassis?

Thanks,

The 1 Series was developed from scratch. Then BMW took the platform as a basis for the E90 and E92.

I saw the same thing in Car & Driver Magazine. They said that the 1-series was "based on the previous-generation 3-series (E46)". I thought that was kind of weird. There's nothing wrong with the E46, but I own an E46 (330i) and was hoping for a "new" platform. Oh well...

Don't worry, that was a mistake on C&Ds part. The coupe will have its own platform that shares heavily with the E90, E92, and E87.

I know they say the chassis is new, but it DOES remind me alot of the E46...just not as big. I still think the E46 coupe is one of the more beautiful BMW designs of the past 10 years. Z8 is probably the nicest, IMO.

I thought BMW was done with the "E" codes and moving to "F". Does that start with the new 7 series, then trickle down to the 5, 3, and 1 series?

And the hatches are E87's, right?

Funny how the numbers suggest the coupe was around longer than the hatch.

Yes, but you have to remember the 1-series has been around for a few years.

The new 7-series will be the first to utilize the F-coding as the F01.
