New Member: Excited, and have a few questions.
Last year I had to sell my 1997 328is because it was in the shop constantly. I am currently driving a Civic (ugh) to save until I can afford a lease on a new BMW. I looked at the 3 series but it is too expensive for someone fresh out of college. The 1 series announcement couldn't be better news!
That being said, I do have a few questions.
Thanks. Also, I'm in graphic design so I can take photoshop requests as long as I'm not bombarded. Please do so in private messages as not to clutter this thread. |

Noel - you may be able to see a regular front bumper in the hatchback section of the board - I think a non-M rear section on a coupe can be seen in the photos/video section. Production for the coupe is at the Leipzig plant. And for the last question - "Automobilen sind nicht fur trinkin, nur fahren!" (Automobiles are not for drinking - only driving! ; -)
Welcome aboard!! |

There are pics of a non-M black efficient dynamics branded 1er coupe floating around.
Cupholders. Pics you see are from European models. The cars tend to not have cup holders here. I'm sure they will in the US. Don't know about the tranny or prod plant. |

atr_hugo, glad to hear you refer to the auto tranny as "special". I really enjoyed using it in sport manual mode on the E90 325i that I had overnight when I was considering buying it earlier this year. I found the manual shifts to be fast and seamless. Best execution of a "manumatic" that I've ever driven.
I've seen auto vs. manual flame wars on other boards, and I don't want one to start here. I just was glad to see someone else who likes the 6AT. The auto tranny is perfect for me. There are times I want to shift for myself when I find some twisties to have some fun on, but when I'm plodding back and forth to work on residential streets and city freeways, I like the ability to just put it in D. Best of both worlds. Yeah, you lose the satisfaction of a well executed heel-and-toe downshift, but how many Formula 1 or CART drivers do those anymore anyway? None. |

Noel,
The photos of the European interior show a receptacle for one of the plug-in cup holders that BMW have used in some of their other models. Don't know if US models will get the same execution or something else. You can see the Euro version in the photo below. It's just to the right of the shift lever. |

Black 1er diesel. I assume this is non-M trim as we will see it in NA... More pics here, http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsGa...L=-1&IM=127256

Ther perfect heel and toe downshift is done everytime by the system's electronics - in thrity plus years of trying I think I've done a handful of perfect heel and toe downshifts. ; -)
While I'll opt for the manual tranny (I work from home so there's no commute); I like the idea of a DSG or the ZF 6-spd auto in that I can still get a manual experience with and when I've had too much to drink my wife can get me home with it (she refuses to drive a stick ; -). |

You cant see them in the pics, but I believe the cupholders are under the center console much like they were in an E46. Actually, in that pic above, you can see one of the cupholders just behind the menu button for the iDrive.

Yeah, I've run into the drinking and no one being able to drive my car problem a few times. A DSG I could live with. Do we know if they are bringing it to the 1 like they are rumored to be bringing it to the 3?

Aha! I tried unsuccessfully to find an interior pic of the non-iDrive cupholders the other day. Thanks ibeam81! I don't know if they're deep enough to hold big things, but at least they're there and not the same as the ones on the E90. Morning coffee is essential on my 40 minute commute.

I am new member as well. I am wait listed on the M3 but after reading initial price estimates I am not sure if I want to spend 70k out the door on the new car. Then I heard about the 135i and it got me really excited. This is the M3 I was hoping for, a small and agile car with a decent engine. The new m3 will be a screamer but at my age I am not sure if I want to spend that much on the new car even if I can afford one.
My only reservation is the availability of a M1 later in 2008. Btw the new Civics are great cars. I bought one to replace my totalled vehicle until the M comes out and I have no regrets. It's one fine commuter. (Can't beat the avg 37mpg and much improved interior) Quote:

The E92 M3 will be an awesome car, no doubt. However, the 135i will be the sleeper of the decade and will, over time, become the 'poor man's M3'. At half the price going in and so easy to up the power, it's a no-brainer for me.

I agree. I just dont want to regret getting a 135i, which is unlikely, when a M version of it comes out in a year.

Based on BMW's past history, if they do an M version of the 1 Series it would most likely be out in the Fall of 2009 as a 2010 model. Then those of us that must scratch the Motorsport itch can trade in our 135s, having enjoyed them for a year-and-a-half.

I think I am going to go ahead and get the 135i first. I don't think I can wait until 2009 without a fun car. |
