1 Series dimensions?

How does the 1 series coupe compare in size with the e30, e92, and e10? I see that the 1 three door's wheelbase (105") is four inches longer than the e30's (101") and almost four inches shorter than the e90's (108.7").

Does anybody have other specs for these models? It would be useful to compare the length, width, interior room and unladen weight of the 135i with the e30, e92 and 2002. I'm having trouble finding the numbers though. I think using figures for the 1 three door would be close enough. But I can't even find those. :iono:

This was posted earlier in another thread. Unfortunately I don't remember the poster's name, but I still want to give them credit and thank them too.

Probably a good comparison would be the three door 130i. So here's a translation of specs from the UK site:

Wheelbase ~ 104"
Height ~ 56"
Width ~ 76"
Length ~ 166"
Weight (130i 3 dr) ~3252 lbs


A good comparison would be a car like a 96 E36 M3:

Wheelbase ~ 106.3" (2.3" longer)
Height ~ 52.6" (3.4" shorter)
Width ~ 67.3" (8.7" narrower)
Length ~ 174.5" (8.5" longer)
Weight ~3175 lbs (77lb lighter)


Now compare to the original E30 M3:

Wheelbase ~ 100.9" (3.1" shorter)
Height ~ 53.9" (2.1" shorter)
Width ~ 66.1" (9.9" narrower)
Length ~ 171.1" (5.1" longer)
Weight ~2646 lbs (606lb lighter)


And to the original 2002tii:

Wheelbase ~ 98.4" (7.6" shorter)
Height ~ 55.5" (0.5" shorter)
Width ~ 62.6" (13.4" narrower)
Length ~ 166.5" (0.5" longer)
Weight ~ 2310 lbs (942lb lighter)


If you notice, they were pretty faithful to the height and length of the 2002. The weight is unfortunate, but in a world of safer cars, luxuries, and electronics, 3252 is still fairly lightweight.

I think a nice comparison for size would be against S2000, Chrysler Crossfire, Solstice, new Miata, Z4, E30, Z3, new Mini, hell even the original 2002. I'm too lazy to check it all right now, but I'm sure the overzealous types have checked into the size; as thats probably a concern for some of the buyers. Even size can't squash my excitement for this car! Would be cool if some of the photoshop pros could put each car on the same scale on a graph. I'll stop rambling about wants now :drinking:

Its not really fair comparing the 1 to the two-seaters. This really isn't a small car (by my standards at least), but knowing BMW the car will wear it's size well.

Very impressive jbbrann - extremely interesting, and a brilliant use of charting! Thank you very much!

A couple of suggestions for a future version: (1) Add the RX-8 - similar pricing, 4 seater sports coupe. (2) Scale the graph so that all the 1 Series parameters are set at 100 with the other cars scaled from that. This would make the relative differences from the 1 easier to pick up given such a loaded graph. (Admittedly this change would require a lot of extra work.)

What I'm liking here:

• the 1 coupe is shorter than I thought it would be, not significantly longer than the Zs or an S2000
  
• the height - no higher than a MINI? That is good news if it's true but I find it a bit hard to believe... Not so happy to see it's higher than the 335 coupe though.
  
• the wheelbase to length ratio - not as good as a MINI's but whose is? Better than the Miata's and the rest of the BMW fleet

Not so good (no brownie points for guessing this!):

• the weight - more aluminum, magnesium etc. was called for to cut down the bloat. BMW should have followed the lead provided by Audi with their weight reduction program for the new TTs.

Are you referring to the front or rear seat leg room? I read something either on this site or BMWUSA.com that made some reference to taller people sitting comfortably in the rear seats in the car.

I thought I read that too, however I think it was in some BMW marketing materials so I took it with a grain of salt. Hopefully we get some actual measurements soon.

Mini's are very upright vehicles. It's not much of a feat for a true coupe to have less height than a Mini, IMHO.

The first-gen new Minis have always struck me as having a low roof, but I can't say I have really checked carefully - I certainly plan to the next time I walk/drive by one.

Addendum: 2005 Mini was 1408mm high - same to the millimetre as a 135i!

Just checked my car manual - the 135i will be 7% taller than my current ride, just 9 cm up - not bad at all.

Taking Devon's excellent suggestion I have changed the chart to indicate the specs as a percentage of the 135i's (and added the RX-8, a good comparison and Infiniti G37).



I originally overstated they 135i's weight because I was using EU weight as opposed to curb weight for the other cars.

Some thoughts:
-Wow, the G37 is heavy at 3700 lbs. That was very disappointing to me.

-I, too, was surprised at the height of the Mini. I would have thought it's relatively stubby dimensions would make it appear taller than it is in reality, but it seems the opposite is true.

A big thanks for the new chart, jbbrann - it makes it much easier to quickly grasp the relative differences of various models in comparison to the 1 coupe. This is a keeper - if it were prettier I'd use it as my wallpaper! :tongue:

It's good to see the 135i has dropped a few pounds, too.

I just sold my modded 2005 Mini Cooper S. My wife has a 2002 A6 4.2 and the Mini roof always seemed higher than hers when parked next to each other. Official specs don't lie though I guess... *shrug*

In the 335i vs. G37 comparisons, it seems that the G37 wins on price (and performance if the N54 craps out :mad. However, most reviewers seem to consider the 335i more refined and easier to drive fast. The 135i should be cheaper and might drive even better than the 335i, so it will be interesting to see how the 135i compares to the G37. If the price is right the 135i has the potential to really hit the sweetspot. We'll see I guess. I'm hoping for the best.

The G37 is still quite a bit heavier than the 335i as well. It didn't expect to see a nearly 200lb. increase in the G37 over the G35 given the fact that the dimensions are almost identical and Nissan supposedly decreased the weight of the powerplant.

I'm interested in the G37/135i comparison also. They should be competitors in price, if not segment, something that is often overlooked by the car mags.
