THE TYPICAL 128i buyer.......

I'm trying to think of typical options a 128i buyer would purchase. Lets say the car starts off at $27,000 for a 128i.

I would have to say:

$1300- Automatic transmission(i'd say 75% of bmws are sold with them)
$500- Metallic Paint
$1450-Leather(b/c god forbid you buy your first bmw without leather...right)
$595- Destination and Handling

Were looking at $30,840. Thats for a car that does not have a sport package or items from the premium package such as power seats or a digital compass.

What do you guys think a typical 128i would come in at with typical options?? My guess is at least $31,000. And thats if it starts at $27,000.

I would agree with you although some my opt for the premium package pushing it to 33-34k. This would put the car in line with the 328 but with much more options and a little more speed given the lighter weight.

I'll agree with Lips. The most commonly sold BMW in North America is the 328i Step/ZPP.

The only question is how well BMWNA will break into the segment they are obviously trying to get, and if they do get the new buyers, would they option the cars with even less than your base 3er demographic.

Sounds about right, although I think more people will go for the premium package assuming that it includes leather.

I would say leather, metallic paint and auto will be less common on 128i that they are BMW-wide. The majority will have those options, but as an entry level choice for many, I think the leather and paint would certainly be less for most. For the tranny, since the model is more sports oriented, and may be targetting a younger crowd, I'd say a propotionately higher number of 128i will be manual.

My hope is that it will come with climate control and iPod connection as standard features. I'd get the manual tranny and probably opt for a sport package. If leather cloth is available and is significantly less expensive than full leather, I'll be all over that, too...

I doubt cloth will be an option in the US, but the leatherette (sp) seating is pretty nice believe it or not. It is made from Naugahide (sp) and is much more durable than leather. Not sure if any of you had a chance to look at it, but it looks like leather to most people. My mom has it in her black 3 series convertible because it was the only one left in stock with the equipment she wanted on it. If I needed to save money I would definitely get this car with the leatherette.

I left out the premium package because I predict it might be a bit too much for some people. Its over $3,000 on a 3 series. Manual?? I still believe the automatic tranny will conquer more sales. Maybe the percentages will be 60/40.

I agree on the leatherette. Upholstery is the first option to go out the window for me if price becomes a factor, 'cause the leatherette is good. My mother, too, has it in her 3-series and it's pretty damn close to leather.

I think your right (mostly because you're agreeing with me :biggrin

Like I would say so often with my Miata bretheren, why would you want this car with an auto. It's going to be a blast to row throw the gears...

I would think most would get the car with manual, but given BMW's in general I still think the automatics will win out, but again this BMW is targeting a different market than the current ones.

I had a 1995 red/black. It was my first new car. Loved it 'til the day I let it go. I have still yet to drive a 5-speed as sweet as that car had, and the balance was beautiful.

I envy you for your '07... They have evolved beautifully...

Yeah, we love that car, it drives like it is on rails. I kind of grew up with them. My parents had a 90, one grandparent has a 95, and the other one had an 01.

Yeah more Miata owners =) I have an 06 NC as well which will likely be leaving the stable when I buy a 1 series. More then likely I'll pick up an early NA though to toy around with.

As for the 128 I think the auto with the sport pack and cold weather pack will sell very well. I cans ee the auto/manual split at 70/30

Not the typical 128i, but this is how I would equip it if I were to get one. This is assuming that M Sport will be an option because I will only consider a 128i if M Sport becomes an option. I also estimated the prices of the options.

Base Price: $28,000
Destination: $775
Metallic Paint: $475
M Sport Package: $2,100
Xenon Headlights: $700
Comfort Access: $500
Navigation: $1,800
Optioned Price: $34,350

Given the fact that the 328 starts at 35,300 MSRP does anyone think the 128 will seriously hurt sales of the 328. Eric you just equipped a pretty nicely loaded 128 for around 34k. If I had a choice between a nicely loaded 1 or bone stock 328 I would easily choose a one...It makes me wonder if we are estimating too low for the initial pricing :iono:

I think the base price of the 128i will start at $24k....

I believe BMW will price similar to the WRX and STi

The WRX is approx $24k and the STi is approx $32k

I have nothing to support my theory. Just a guess. The horsepower figures are similar.

Sweeper I wish you were correct because that would result in major savings for everyone on this forum, but I think 24k is highly unlikely but we can hope can't we

Faux leather is better then the real thing. I had it in my 98 328is, incredible stuff.

Thats all I'm going to write. I'm not the typical 128 buyer...
More of a 123d type of buyer...

It is, the only thing it is missing is the new car/leather smell. If it had that I would actually prefer it.
