Sunroof delete for N.America
OK.... a little twist to the weight topic.
Since it's pretty much a lock that N.Amer will not be able to order a car w/o sunroof. What about pulling out the sunroof & tin roof, then installing a custom CF roof  (I've seen it done on an E46 M3) What's your best guess for the weight that would be saved???

Is it possible that a sunroof in the 1 Series would be an option and or part of the premium package and not a standard equipment item to keep entry price low.
I was talking with my friend the other day about how awesome a carbon fiber roof will look on the new 1. -Chris

How much weight does the sunroof add?
The sunroof adds about 40 pounds http://m3.madrussian.net/faq.shtml#35 take it for what its worth! Id say after installing the CF plug, youd be down a net of 30lbs. Thats pretty good considering its 30lbs from the TOP of the car. |

The look would be great.
I'm also interested in dropping some lb. from the top of the car.

Rip the whole thing off & install a complete CF roof. I'm guessing it'd be at least 50lb.

Sunroof adds around 60 lbs and CF probably saves another 20 or so, so I think around 80 lbs would be saved and it would certainly lower the center of gravity for improved handling and headroom...

I'd consider that after my warranty was done with, depending on if I was making the car a dedicated track rat. Lightweight seats and tires and wheels would be lower in the car, but be way more cost effective.

Holy-overkill. While it looks neat, unless you're actually competitively racing, why bother? Actually, even the limitless budget pro racers don't build CF roofs onto their e90s.
I'll keep my sunroof and enjoy the the free tan. If you're so serious about performance,........ get coilovers and an LSD. -Mahlzeit |

BTW over the years I have accepted that many car-folks are into looks more than lap times, and I can respect that. To each their own,.... and I do admit I like looking at cars, and not just driving them. Cheers!

On the 135i, the moonroof is standard in the US market. I would say it's a safe bet it will be an option on the 128i.

That's my understanding as well. Unfortunately it has the 135i performance junkies up in arms. I'm okay with the sunroof, but maybe there will be a sunroof delete option for those more concerned with maximizing performance.

If an "M1" is truly in the works, it should have a CF roof, along with other weight saving goodies.
Custom Fabricating, like above, was probably an insane amount of money. I think I remember reading that thread before, linked off bf.c Yes, I will definitely give you props for undergoing such a project  , but at what cost? :iono: |

It's certainly possible to do a CF roof swap. But I'll side with those who believe that swapping out the wheels/tires, exhaust, seats will net you at least 150lbs, perhaps more. Even though it's not at the top of the car, it's a more significant weight loss.
Add another 30-40lbs from front CF hood and rear CF trunk and perhaps another 30lbs from tossing the rear seats out the window - many possibilities, all for a lower budget than the CF roof. OH wait, titanium lug bolts are known to save some 5lbs or so... I also wonder how well the CF roof swap is engineered and what it does for your rollover protection... |

CF roof conversions have been done on quite a number of E46 M3's. And although it is expensive, it isn't as astronomical as one would think.
As for the rollover protection, it's just as structurally sound as the regular roof as it's the a-pillars, b-pillars, and c-pillars that provide most of the strength in a rollover.

I am with you on that seeing as how this will be my first new car and one with a warranty to boot. I will probably go for the conventional lightening mods. The CF sure does look neat though. Plus someone will have the install down to a science by the time I get ready.

weight issues aside, i am a little worried about the headroom in the 1-series. in an e46, my helmet touches the roofliner with the seat all the way down, and i'm six feet even.
perhaps it could be an option if you take european delivery (fingers crossed). |
