OT: 3-Series to get engine improvements

Starting with september production, the new powers are;

For europe, E90

318i 129 hp to 143 hp
318d 122 hp to 143 hp
320i 150 to 170 hp
320d 163 to 177 hp
330i 258 to 272 hp

The 272hp engine from the 330i would be really nice in the 1er Coupe. Lighter than the N54 and less expensive than a 135i.

Isn't the engine in the 330i the same N52 that's in the 328i and 128i here stateside? Man, I'm hoping SOMEONE will come up with an aftermarket software change that gets that power back.

Yes, it is, but it is more than just software.

I know the E90 325i (N52) vs. the E90 330i (N52) differences were single intake vs. triple intake and SW. I think the cams were different too.

You are correct.

I believe the 272 HP version currently is the engine in the 3.0 X3.

260hp in the X3 3.0si

These new improvements apparently include DI (direct injection)

Craaaap. So I'm basically going to be stuck spending $1000 on an intake revision and $1500 on an exhaust revision just to get 14 hp and 10 lb/ft or so more out of my 128i.

No thanks. $2500 ain't worth it for such small gains.

My bad.

I just knew there was more HP in the X3 than in the 330i or 328i.

It would not be cost efficient at all.

Unless you switched old and new, the new numbers are better. That's litres per 100km; a lower number indicates better fuel economy.

I am interested to see if the 128i/328i engine gets the direct injection technology; it was reported on another board that it will. Should result in better mileage and torque, and would be a nice addition.

Interesting because the X3 theoretically, according to the reviews that I have read, is currently available with the direct-injected N52. However, the power output is not the Euro-spec'd 272 which can only be explained by emissions equipment.

The 272 and the 260 hp engine are one in the same. the lower 260 number is due to the new SAE correction figures now being used in the US.

Ok. But the power numbers are down on all engine here in the states as of 2006, so the 260 figure is a lower figure than it would be anywhere else but here in North America.

I suspected it was the N53.

I'm with ya, I love direct injection. It works wonders on the new VAG 2.0T's.

I get the sinking feeling that even though the article says "across all models", they are really referring to European models.

The article says that the 325i and 335i are the only ones not getting DI. That's easy to explain with the 335i - it already has DI. Since the 325i, 328i and 128i all share the same basic engine, I'm assuming this means we won't be seeing DI on the 128i.
